I'm getting reports that a firm is cold calling people "offering grants for renewables and quoting that MARTIN LEWIS had encouraged people to engage with the company."

The call is UTTER BOLLOCKS! This is not true. Don't trust them. Politely disengage and don't speak to them.

Fiscal creep has been an amazingly easy way for recent Governments to raise tax without anyone noticing.

Here's the higher rate tax band since 1990.

It rose faster than inflation from 1994 to 2009. Then began a steep decline - with many more people paying higher rate.

There was absolutely NOTHING in the Chancellors press conference to suggest income tax was going up.

That was the media.

Again.

Going into it believing it was going up a coming out of it repeating the claim.

I never thought it was going up before & didn't think it after.

Everyone doesn’t include Scotland- @danneidle.bsky.social you were kind enough to chart for scotland can you update in the light of the changes [75k ‘advanced’ tax level and highest threshold reduced to 125k]
I proudly present the internet's nerdiest and prettiest tax calculator.

Other calculators just calculate your tax. This one calculates your tax now, and under various Budget proposals. And draws a pretty chart showing the marginal and effective rates for *everyone*.

Apart from money it would reduce hospital admissions and crime.
When the Darling duty escalator was in place alcohol deaths declined after Tories abolished it they rose
Raising alcohol duty by 2% above inflation for 5 years would bring an extra £3.4 billion into the Treasury.

This would pay the salaries of 37,000 NHS nurses over the period.

Try out the @aha-uk.bsky.social calculator to see the economic benefits of a duty escalator: ahauk.org/alcohol-duty...

1/ SNP position on tax claim becoming increasingly untenable. Scot Gov has no information to demonstrate the HMRC analysis (which shows claim is false) is wrong, and won’t say if it believes the claim turned out to be true or false in 2024-25. And yet Swinney keeps repeating it.
