A reminder that the Luddites didn't smash steam engines in british textile mills out of fear of the new, but because they were being used to cut out jobs, produce inferior product & drive skilled tradesfolk out so the rich could pay shit wages.

History continues to prove the Luddites were RIGHT.

AI imitations of creative work (art, writing, etc.) aren't bad because it's "ugly". They already look "good enough" to satisfy most people. AI is bad because it's laundering plagiarism of real human artists AND making us ever-more dependent upon trillion-dollar tech companies.

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.

A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

I can understand asking for nuance in these discussions, but deliberately muddying the water by bringing up automation tools that people understand are not generative AI and asking for a middle ground is disingenuous. The nuanced position is that people are roundly rejecting the tech, respect that.
"Surely there's a middle ground here?" The CEO of Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead says people "jump to extreme takes" when debating generative AI, and that there needs to be more nuance in the discussion.

"Don't think about it", she says to herself as she takes a long swig of the alcohol, burning her throat. "Maybe the account made it harder for her." "Maybe it made it easier", a traitorous refined voice says in this deep dark of night, alone between missions. Her own voice... mostly.
