I'm a Byliner. No clearly identified human author/artist, no sale, no read, no view, no click. Pretty sure my meager follower count is inflated by bots and scammers. I do not maintain my posting history.

I feel like this is somehow risky to say, but it shouldn't be: I cannot possibly care deeply about every issue. I cannot possibly be informed about every issue. Nobody can. I'd rather be honest than performative. I'd rather read what those who do care have to say and keep my mouth shut.

This is a excellent data point for the Wins Are Not a QB Stat community
Last year Sam Darnold was 14-3 with the Vikings. This year he's 13-3 with the Seahawks. He's the first QB in NFL history to have back-to-back 13-win seasons while playing for two different teams.

A recurring “AI” evangelist tactic is using it for tasks that were already solved by tech that is more deterministic, faster, and uses less energy, but has been downgraded or de-emphasised in recent years by software companies

Like, we genuinely used to have better search and spellcheck.

I'd say a bigger trend than LLMs is that Big Tech ran out of ideas years ago and everyone sees it now.

The hyper growth era in US Big Tech is over. They aren't changing the world anymore. They are selling us dumb gadgets with surveillance built in.

Look for growth to come from other countries

And by the way, training your monster on data produced in part by my own hands, without attribution or compensation.

To the others: I apologize to the world at large for my inadvertent, naive if minor role in enabling this assault.

We need a lot more of this from informed technologists.
Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

The primary function of the Internet in this moment is to provide a heat sink. People get mad, and instead of doing something, they vent online and go back to normal life. All this shit should be producing something on the spectrum of millions marching monthly, general strikes, or France in 1789.

So like, yeah, I'm gonna shitpost about how laughably bad the pro-AI position is on the technical merits, but the inhumanity of the pro-AI position on a moral basis is no laughing matter.

I offer Cassandra's Complete Class Theorem¹.

All "good use cases for AI" break down into one of four categories:

I. Bad use case.
II. Good use case, but not something AI can do.
III Good use case, but it's already been done without AI.
IV. Not AI in the LLMs and GANs sense, but in the machine […]

The top of a very, very long list. And that bro-oligarchy is the one Newton and Roose functionally do PR for, lobbing softballs and cheering them on, pretty achy no matter what they do. Metaverse, crypto, water-wasting 'AI' - they never saw a hype cycle they wouldn't uncritically pimp.

And Casey's pals cheer it on. This is the world the 'AI' and metaverse and crypto bros want. They're getting it. And he still cheerleads for them.

Exactly this. There are different forms of “AI” many of which do not use LLMs and are just dolled up machine learning with a GUI. The overused cancer cell example is computer vision image analysis predicated on machine learning pattern matching and highly curated data. Not web scraped prompt slop.

Our collective task is not to save tech but to save us, our world.

The resonant computing manifesto is too focused on means and not on ends. And that's basically the core issue. The belief in technological determinism.
