Colorado friends, this is the week to start watching for Sandhill Cranes moving south, and through the month of October. This is also true for other locations throughout the Midwest. (Archive video from October 2023). Volume up ⬆️

Found 4 active acorn woodpecker granary trees in the mountains today en route to the desert. Group of eight birds very busy very vocal. These really are the coolest woodpeckers. So much fun to be around. 🪶

Imagine being so depraved and hateful that you actually hunt innocent people for a living. And you kill your pets.

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

Denver showed UP tonight!!! Tattered Cover sold out of more books than you see here, and has to order a bunch more that are already spoken for. Thank you, everyone--St. Joseph, MO is next on Oct. 11!
A group of people of various demographics sitting in a few rows of chairs in a bookstore. Many are holding the same book as the author, who stands smiling in the middle of them. A stack of books with dark blue spines and green text that says The Everyday Naturalist, Lexa. They sit on a brown wooden table in a bookstore.

Western Milksnake at Eldorado Canyon today 🌿
Orange, black and white banded snake under a rock. Compare to size of pine needles, it was small!

I think this bird ranks really high on my list for the cutest face. Curious and handsome Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor). #bird #birdphotography #mybirdshots mybirdshots.pixels.com

#Migration season is definitely upon us. Sandhill cranes gather by the thousands at staging areas prior to moving to their wintering grounds. This image of Sandhills in front of the full moon was taken at Crex Meadows in northwestern WI. #BirdoftheDay 🪶
A full moon glows orange over a marsh. It has risen between a break in the treeline and is reflected in the water. Several Sandhill cranes fly across the face of the moon.

I found a White Breasted Nuthatch today... and got to watch it for a good 5 minutes or more. aka... Forever in bird viewing. #birds 😂
Classic body down, heads up pose for a nuthatch. He's holding on to a single small branch. The bird directly over me but in horrible light! Nice feather detail tho. got to maintain those flight feathers. the bird preening. Habitat and the classic pose.

We’re off to the desert. I took this shot in the remote south end of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. The tall cactus is an endemic to eastern San Diego County called a Mason Valley Cholla and it can grow from 9 to 10 feet high. 🌿✌🏻

When you know a guy who can plan perfect locations to witness the rise of the #HarvestMoon. #astronomy #grainelevator #saskatchewan
The rise of the harvest moon is seen adjacent to an old red grain elevator on the Saskatchewan prairie.
