Here is my plan for the coming months and years: keep organizing for an arms embargo & funding for essential social services; try to make it harder for fascists to amass power & carry out plans; try to make the lives of people whose lives I can impact a little bit better.

This very very very bad. I cannot stress this enough. I said that they crossed the Rubicon with arresting Ras Baraka several months ago. This is very bad and portends more bad things for regular people.

Just openly cheering the destruction of any representation of gay people in public space. They think their power is totally unrestricted, and the entire country will support them rolling back society to the 1950s, or maybe the 1850s

If you’re white, your accomplishments are your own and you can resent and criticize the country all you like, but if you’re black and successful you should be grateful to white people for allowing you in their presence. bsky.app/profile/jess...

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude

The majority of mass shooters have a history of violence against women. Learning this about the Manchester attacker was not surprising to me.

Sexual violence should garner much more outrage. Because victims deserve that and public safety depends on it.

One thing that comes through awfully clearly in these ICE videos is how many of these goons gravitated toward the job because being able to assault people with impunity is a big thrill for them.

Ezra Klein 🤝 Neera Tanden

Despite the overwhelming popularity of abortion rights in all states, we should surrender instead
Neera Tanden @neeratanden
This is something people really have to take seriously. We need to expand the tent.

Ezra Klein says the more worried you are about authoritarianism, the more willing you've got to be to run pro-life Democrats in red states.

A totalitarian movement must never achieve its goals, as that would eliminate the need for the movement itself. Even in victory, new enemies must be created in order to justify further cruelty and domination.

A grim reminder: these people will never be satisfied. There’s no point at which they will say “we’ve won, let’s enjoy life.” They will always be looking for someone else to punish, to revile, to dehumanize. They’re empty without that.

praise for Kirk from liberal pundits is one of the clearest distillations of how ill-equipped they are for this fascist moment, & how devoted they are to a West Wing fantasy of a respectable right/conservative movement that does not exist, and which - like Kirk - almost never operates in good faith

Mass Migration and Liberalism’s Fall
by bret stephens Liberals and progressives typically dismiss replacement theory as antisemitic, racist demagoguery, and no doubt there are plenty of bigots who believe it. But maybe some measure of understanding ought to be extended to ordinary voters who merely wonder why they should be made to feel like unwelcome outsiders in parts of their own country or asked to pay a share of their taxes for the benefit of newcomers they never agreed to welcome in the first place or extend tolerance to those who don’t always show tolerance in return or be told to shut their mouths over some of the more shocking instances of migrant criminality.

The term antisemitism is not a “diversionary tactic”—but this kind of gotcha reply is! Term was popularized in 1880s w the founding of the League of Antisemites. It specifically means opposition to Jews as a people. We can oppose genocide w/o erasing this history or denying reality of antisemitism
critizen11.bsky.social
And it needs to be restated - Palestinians are Semites too so the motivation of those decrying Israel’s behaviour cannot be anti- semitism. It’s starting to look as though the term anti- semitism is a diversionary tactic to deflect the conversation from the reality that anti-Zionism is the correct

The thing is, the situation was never “a minority is right by virtue of their identity”

It has always been and still is that you are responsible for being attentive to how power dynamics shape what you notice and don’t notice, how you interpret tone, what you weight as important or devalue, etc

I try to be understanding, but jesus christ, the whole story is about how infiltration (which I’ve also covered for years) is not necessary when agencies are openly recruiting them, and they’ve volunteering, and their missions are now the same

The "new" Proud Boys? Um… hate to break it to you, but many of these federal agents are literally Proud Boys, as are many local police officers. Proud Boy infiltration of law enforcement is no secret.
Federal Agents Are the New Proud Boys
It used to be far-right groups who flooded cities wearing masks and military gear, looking for a fight. Now it’s anonymous federal agents who are violently attacking people on the street.

But yeah, this is why spending the last five years embracing policing as a common-sense bipartisan institution, with critics being attributed to the result of some mass hysteria, was always going to end poorly. Because the police weren’t changing, and the violence never stopped.

Niemöller was a Nazi. He fought in the Freikorps. He was a willing participant in the Third Reich because he had sought and received assurances from Hitler himself that the Nazis would not go after Protestants. Then he ended up in a Camp. He was wrong. That’s why he wrote the poem.
