There is a 6 year old whose mom (Renee Nicole Good) was killed today in Minnesota by an ICE agent. His dad (who gave 14 years to the United States Air Force before retiring) passed away in 2023.

My heart hurts for this child.

The woman shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Jan. 7, was identified by her mother as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. Donna Ganger told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter lived in the Twin Cities with her partner. In a joint statement, several Minneapolis Councilmembers confirmed she lived in the city. Ganger said the family was notified of the death late Wednesday morning. “That’s so stupid” that she was killed, Ganger said, after learning some of the circumstances from a reporter. “She was probably terrified.” Ganger said her daughter is “not part of anything like that at all,” referring to protesters challenging ICE agents. “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” she said. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.” Renee Nicole Good (Provided by Timmy Ray Macklin Sr.) An Instagram account that appears to be Good’s describes her as a “poet and writer and wife and mom and shitty guitar strummer from Colorado; experiencing Minneapolis, MN.” Good had previously been married to Timmy Ray Macklin Jr., who died in 2023 at the age of 36. Macklin’s father, Timmy Ray Macklin Sr., was shocked to hear the news that Good had been shot and killed. He said Good and his son had a child who is now 6 years old. “There’s nobody else in his life,” Macklin Sr. said. “I’ll drive. I’ll fly. To come and get my grandchild.”

This is excellent coverage: it gives readers context beyond the specific incident, showing a pattern of excessive force, and also documents that DHS keeps using the same and increasingly debunked explanations. Much better than both sidesing the shooting.

An official from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis told MPR News that armed U.S. Border Patrol officers came onto school property during dismissal Wednesday and began tackling people; they handcuffed two staff members and released chemical weapons on bystanders. “The guy, I'm telling him like, ‘Please step off the school grounds,’ and this dude comes up and bumps into me and then tells me that I pushed him, and he's trying to push me, and he knocked me down,” said a school official, who spoke to MPR News on condition of anonymity. “They don't care. They're just animals,” the official added. “I've never seen people behave like this.” The school leader said armed officers with apparent Border Patrol insignia on their uniforms arrived at the school in several SUV vehicles during dismissal on Wednesday afternoon. They broke out the window of a vehicle. “There's a car that got hit. I don't know how it got hit. They broke out the window,” the school official said. “Then different Neighborhood Watch, people, everybody, people, the staff in the school came out. And then they started coming on the property of the school and pushing people and tackling people and shooting pepper spray and pepper balls. And they handcuffed two of our employees.” Video shared with MPR News shows armed, masked officers with apparent Border Patrol insignia on their uniforms dragging a person on a sidewalk outside of the high school and tussling with another person as bystanders blow whistles and shout. The school official said some high school students were involved in altercations with officers. Many sheltered at a nearby library. The school is located about 3 miles from where an ICE officer fatally shot a woman earlier Wednesday.

I was personally briefed by Secretary Rubio this morning. While there is still much we don’t know, this mission appears to have been a limited scope operation, run in conjunction with law enforcement, that effectively apprehended an international criminal. Congress should have been informed about the operation earlier and needs to be involved as this situation evolves. Maduro was a ruthless dictator who was not considered to be the legitimate leader of Venezuela by both the Biden and Trump administrations as well as by the European Union. The long-term success of today’s operation will depend on our ability to work with international and private sector partners.

B98.5 article: The last few years have not been easy for Maine hospitals and other medical centers. Since 2020, we have heard about several notable hospitals closing their doors. Additionally, many more have made adjustments to what they offer for services. Aroostook County's Houlton Regional Hospital, for example, has closed their birthing department. This has forced parents-to-be living in the area to travel an hour or more for services related to giving birth. Now, we are getting word that another Maine healthcare center has announced it will close permanently.
