I think about this, like, all the time, and am also extremely bitter that my arrival at both college and grad school has coincided with the library being closed for construction, thereby precluding YEARS of rich browsing experience
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

The IRA was useful, in a way, for testing a particular political theory of climate action: that you could hide its transformational nature and get support for it by mostly offloading it onto red state corporations. It was a reasonable theory. And now we are going to have to try something else
"The IRA’s survival was premised on the logic that a loose alignment of corporations would support climate policies in exchange for subsidies and convince Republicans to get on their side. That didn’t work." newrepublic.com/article/2027...

It was far too easy for Republicans to kill the Inflation Reduction Act. Where did those who crafted it go wrong?

I have no musical training, but Víkingur Ólafsson's new album, Opus 109, felt wonderful and fresh to me, and I think this review might get at why. I highly recommend

Olafsson’s account of Beethoven’s Op 109 is one of the most beautiful on record, the centrepiece of a recording that links the composer to Bach and Schubert
