two minutes that’s got space for a brave New Yorker from Minsk who helped make the clinic possible, reproductive justice, eugenics in feminism, the Yiddish history of New York, steep maternal mortality rates for Black women in Brownsville today, and what the city can do to support new families
UNTIL IT'S DONE, Ep. 2

When the Brownsville Clinic opened in 1916, it was the first birth control center in America. Its very existence felt impossible. For young women, it was a lifeline.

109 years later, the Clinic is long closed—but Brownsville mothers are still struggling.

Trump mused about wanting to get into Heaven -- then his administration tried to deport 600 unaccompanied minors to Guatemala. My Nation take on this monstrous effort. Please contact your elected representatives and get them to talk out on this deportation plan. www.thenation.com/article/poli...
The Terror and Cruelty of Trump’s Deportation Machine
The administration’s immigration policies have gone from awful to monstrous, culminating with this weekend’s move to send roughly 600 unaccompanied children back to Guatemala.

She knows what Trump’s cuts to Medicaid will mean for her patients — and why we need a Mayor who will fight for New Yorkers, not conspire with a President who kicks them off their insurance.

Re-upping this @thenation.com piece from a few months ago--it's looking like Repubs will rescind previously approved federal funding for US public media. Although a relative pittance, this loss means that some individual stations, mostly in rural areas, will likely go under to become news deserts.
New piece in The Nation arguing that we need public media more now than ever. We must defend what we have with an eye toward expanding and restructuring public media in the future.
We Must Save Public Media to Change It
We need public media more than ever—it’s too precious to let Trump defund it. But to live up to its democratic promise, we must support public media to serve our needs.

Youman Wilder said caught feds questioning youth about where they're from & country of origin, so, he told feds to back off & kids to not answer!

“Then they started to talk about cuffing me, and that if the kids were here legally, what do they have to lose by answering. I told them that they still have their fifth and fourth amendment rights, and that they don’t have to speak to you or help with any investigation.”

When I met Ryan Coogler several years ago, we were standing in a group of people chatting, when a woman with visible hearing aids walked up, and he casually began to sign the whole conversation so she could participate. She mouthed “thank you”. He nodded and just kept doing his thing.
