In March of 2024 I wrote up this thread criticizing the fascism-minimizers on the left. Corey Robin got all mad about it on Twitter when he saw one, out of context screenshot from it. Now he thinks Trump is a fascist. bsky.app/profile/seth...
There's one aspect of this "fascism debate" that I think is important but which doesn't get talked about much because it's hard to do without it sounding like an ad hominem attack. That is, many "fascism minimizers" are products of east coast, privileged bubbles. www.newyorker.com/books/under-...
Trump and the F-Word
In a new book, “Did It Happen Here?,” scholars debate what the F-word conceals and what it reveals.

I appreciate this critique of the anti-Cassandra position. In my experience, the Cassandras weren’t “liberal east coast elites,” they were people like me who grew up in and/or currently lived in reddish or purple places, among people who were warming (or just acquiescing) to fascism.

This past Sunday, from 8am to 8pm, New Yorkers from every corner of our city traveled to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria to share their dreams, their worries, the change they want to see across New York. It was an honor listening to each of them.

Friends!!! You know how obsessed I have become with Common Sense.

Tom Paine published that pamphlet 250 years ago this January. I published an essay about it TODAY, in the New York Times. Common Sense remains relevant as ever.

I hope you enjoy it. Gift article ⬇️⬇️⬇️

The aftermath of DOGE and Musk illegally dismantling USAID. This is the only thing any of them should be remembered for.
"Mothers had to choose which of their kids to feed...Pregnant women with life-threatening anemia were so desperate for calories that they ate mud. Out of options and mortally afraid, refugees began fleeing...They said they’d rather risk being shot or dying on the perilous route than slowly starving"
NEW: Without USAID funding to help buy food for refugees, the World Food Program rushed to prioritize families based on need, determining that only half the population would get food.

Refugees learned which half they were in from a number stamped on the back of their ration card.

The Sahm Rule is flashing red, and the unemployment rate is rising.

What does this mean?
- For sure the economy is in a MALAISE. (Close to no job growth since Liberation Day.)
- I reckon it's in a jobless SLUMP.
- It may be in or on the cusp of a RECESSION.

Lest we get on a high horse about, I bet Democratic voters would similarly struggle. Normal people simply don’t pay attention to the news the way we political junkies do. They are unaware of the drama and controversy. They barely know who is president.
