Hey, Bluesky. Hi. I'm a writer and editor in NYC who should probably be using this account to promote my work instead of just yelling about politics. I also like baseball and crafts. Here is a picture of my cat.

The funny thing about this standard MAGA response to protest is that in this case not only is it once again a lie, but the people they’re protesting — immigration officers — are literally paid agitators and chaos agents from out of state.
Emmer: "The people you're seeing in these videos, the vast majority of them I do not believe are from Minnesota. These are organized chaos agents, paid agitators. The vast majority of Minnesotans that are talking to me appreciate that law enforcement has arrived, and they are happy they're there."

The FBI is a rule-bound and tight-lipped institution, but 45 current and former agents spoke to The New York Times Magazine anyway — a sign of the extreme alarm rippling through it. Many said that with the agency under Kash Patel's leadership, the U.S. is less safe. nyti.ms/4qzxs0f

The thing with the Jack Smith hearing is that it was always just going to be a platform for Republican grandstanding, and their lines of questioning are just so effing stupid and beside the point, and I'm sure they'll get their time on Fox, etc., but it just feels like such a waste of time.

Hey, maybe NY does some redistricting after all. (This potential redraw is bonkers. Staten Island + Lower Manhattan? That's some dogs-and-cats-living-together madness.)
Easy living for Brad Lander?

Regular Staten Island Joe, Dan "Levi's heir" Goldman?

The East Village x Tottenville link up?

So, the big deal is the status quo?
“.. Denmark would give the United States sovereignty over small pockets of Greenlandic land where the United States could build military bases, according to three senior officials ..”

This is very dumb, but for some perspective, $16 a day times 7 days a week is $112, which is about what I, a single person who lives alone, spend on groceries each week. So I'm guessing families are not, in fact, able to buy 3 squares a day for $16/day.
Brooke Rollins is still at it!

"We had run almost 1,000 simulations, and between $3 and $4 is a fair number if you can have access to that food. I just saw new numbers that were run: a full day, meaning 3 full square meals and a snack, is about $15.64."

The choice is impeachment and removal or calamity for the United States. I don't see how anybody watching Trump's speech in Davos can draw any other conclusion. He's a senile madman.

Says a man who I am certain has never read a history book. (Spoiler: This is not what ended World War I.)
Trump: "World War 1 -- they lost 100 million people. It actually ended World War 1. A lot of people don't know. The Spanish flu in World War 1 ended the war."

Perhaps Trump going full eugenics for a second straight day will cause the media to realize they need to make it a headline.
Trump: "Somalia -- they turned out to be higher IQ than we thought. I always say, 'These are low IQ people.' How did they go into Minnesota and steal all that money?"

Attn news commentators: Trump saying he could use force to obtain Greenland but won’t is not Trump saying he won’t use force to obtain Greenland. It is Trump using force as a threat to obtain Greenland. That is why he mentions it.

Wrote some "hey, do something" emails to my reps this morning and got so worked up I misspelled my own last name in one of them, but still, they have now heard from me.

It's funny talking to friends who are like, "Well, Trump clearly wants spheres of influence and wants to control..." And I always have to be like, No. He's very stupid. He wants Greenland because it looks big in the Mercator projection, and also he maybe thinks Norway and Denmark are the same.

He can't because they're run by states, but also, you know, historically, there was an election Lincoln was pretty sure he would lose in the middle of the Civil War. We don't cancel elections.
Trump says a lot of deranged shit, but, per this Reuters article — and the threats of invoking the Insurrection Act in Minnesota this morning — he is very clearly exploring how to cancel the midterms.

People not in Minnesota: please read this excellent summary of what life is like in Minneapolis since the murderous scum ICE swarmed here. And more are on their way. By local reporter / writer / bike dude / legend @dbrauer.net .

My brother works for a big conglomerate that has offices in Minneapolis, and ICE detailed a citizen who works for the company. One of my brother's colleagues in Minneapolis reports that ICE set up a highway patrol and is stopping everyone who is not white. This seems like an ICE escalation.

You wouldn't know the award. It lives in Canada.
Trump: "I got an award in Detroit, in Michigan, many years ago, and still have it. They said it never happened. It did happen it turned out. I didn't notice any apology but all I did was talk about you're losing your car industry. This was long before I ran for politics."

The letter from Bill and Hillary Clinton to James Comer explaining their refusal to testify in his Epstein investigation is really remarkable, not like any letter of this genre I've seen. It's signed by them, not a lawyer, and the arguments are not legal ones. Reprinted from their X account:

I talked to my aunt in St. Paul over the weekend, and she said that all the activity in the Twin Cities kept her in her house for a few days, and now, because of ICE activity there, the grocery store in her neighborhood closed. She was gearing up to join a protest, though.

Given news that CBP shot two people in Portland, re-upping this thread
As with Minnesota, as with many other DHS shootings, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin is already out saying the people who were shot were using their car as a weapon. Barely needs to change the press release at this point.
Given news that ICE shot and killed an observer in Minneapolis, here is a pattern we've seen before:
*DHS say officers were under threat. This justifies to use deadly force.
*Subsequent reporting shows such claims simply don't hold up.
