look, I like Taylor Swift cultural analysis. I like her legacy in popular culture (that is — an unironic feminine stronghold the likes of which don't normally take center stage in our world). I LOVE folklore. her music has a place in the evolution of my musical tastes...

this is GROSS! CANCEL YOUR PRIME SUBSCRIPTION!
twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

since I started making todo lists as an adult, they very quickly lost their sort of pure usefulness because of how overwhelming it is to have a lot to do.

seems like they're finally coming back around... it's useful to make them, even if not all of it gets done or it gets done in a chaotic way :)

If any other president in all of history said the military should use American cities as a training ground he would be removed from office that same day. The hardest thing to tolerate in all this is how relatively silent elected democrats are. It’s ridiculous.

seriously, why the fuck isn't this happening? why haven't we heard jack fucking shit from Democrats as this country careens headlong into fascism?
In a sane country with competent leadership, the 50 highest-ranking Democrats would call a press conference to denounce what just happened as a threat to the republic and demand Trump's immediate impeachment and removal from office.

I don't know he could make his intentions more clear.

I don't think the people expressing surprise about things the Trump administration is doing understand how absolutely fucking crazymaking each of your posts is for Black and Indigenous folks who called *all of this* and sat through people talking about "respecting norms" for years

damn. I have made some mistakes in life (some even sizable), and I often doubt my own competence. but at least I didn't fuck up as monumentally as any of the Republicans who voted not to convict Trump after he was impeached and play a direct role in ushering fascism into this country

well, this week was a complete wash productively.

but, I'm still kicking. here's to another week of this hellscape

thoughtful analysis. gets at how "free speech" has been co-opted by the right as a sort of negative virtue signal, to play on peoples' reluctance to be more tolerant (and, at times, plain white extremism/racism/xenophobia)
I have a couple of comments about the "free speech hero" narrative about Charlie Kirk.

First, was Charlie Kirk really notable for supporting the free speech of people he disagreed with? I haven't noticed that, though I could have missed it.

accurately captures the leading sentiment I feel about *gestures broadly* but for a different contextual reason. not that that matters!
I do not care for the number of cameras I am captured by on any given day. I'm a nice little lady doing no evil deeds but on my walk to the damn library I hear this little voice coming from above saying "You are being recorded" and I feel like I'm in a dystopian teen novel, I hate it.

maybe this is the moment when we can agree political violence of any kind is bad, and that includes getting involved in geopolitical conflicts that do not directly involve us, but instead serve to prop up our dwindling economic influence.

maybe instead of America First, America Morally Consistent?

I have entirely stopped updating here with my new books (as predicted), but I have read 16 books this year so far, all of which have been enjoyable (on track to meet my overall goal of 25!)

notable reads: God of the Woods, Dark Matter, Babel, The Vanishing Half, and the Daevabad trilogy #booksky

I love the kind of people whose last update on Goodreads was 8 years ago, and they were reading Crime and Punishment & Infinite Jest at the same time.

"and they say they're still reading..." and all that.

sending virtual good vibes and sincere gratitude to @aoc.bsky.social. your continuation of the work Bernie Sanders has done, and the brand new work you're doing to sew seeds of hope for young people in the US, is so powerful. I can imagine this isn't easy, to say the least. your smile is heroic!

so every Congressperson except for Bernie Sanders, AOC and their allies are just going to sleepwalk into fascism?

like you took a job to serve the country, I know you thought you didn't really need values but it turns out the responsibility isn't just something you lie about during election years!

oligarchy laid bare. these fucking goons are only pro-Trump because they aren't for the public good, they're for their own good, and guess what? the guy can't run a country anymore than he can string 5 sentences together into a necklace
Several sources tell me a passel of high profile tech and also finance leaders is making a trip to Mar-a-Lago to read Trump the riot act — um talk common sense — to him on the tariffs. Their million dollar donations to the inauguration is turning into billions in losses.

billionaires 🤝🤝 autocrats
I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc
DOGE says it has saved $55 billion in federal spending so far, but its website only accounts for $16.6 billion of that

Abolish bank regulators. “Delete” the CFPB & IRS. Gut Social Security and Medicare.

The Trump administration’s plots all boil down to the same thing: swindle working people, funnel money to the ultra-rich.
