New followers: I make zines about disability!

All are free online as well as for sale as physical copies. The information shouldn't be paywallled.

-'Your Life Is Not Over: A Book Of Apocalypses And How To Survive Them'
-'Become Unbutterable'
-'Who Counts As Disabled?'

Here's what they're about:
Zine cover, blue with stars. Four line drawings in white of a comet, a wave, a fire and an iceberg. White writing: your life is not over: A Book Of Apocalypses And How To Survive Them. Fiona Robertson
(a guide for newly sick and disabled people) Zine cover, turquoise with a drawn main picture of a ginger cat and a small drawing of a calico cat nuzzling a ginger cat. Writing: become Unbutterable: Jorts, Jean and the extended metaphor for Disability accommodations in the workplace nobody asked for but everyone needs!
Disability! Cats! Memes! Big stretches!
Fiona Robertson Zine cover with green ferns and leaves on a cream background. Writing: who counts as disabled? Fiona Robertson Me, a white woman with dark hair wearing a turquoise mask, holding three of my zines at a zine fair.

I know I talk about this quite lightly, but that's a coping mechanism. They are weird and pathetic, but I am genuinely scared. Nazis being so open is a terrifying step, and we don't know who they're linked to. They followed me to my car yesterday to film me. We don't have the numbers we need here.

After last week's Hotel-Shouting Team put up the 14 Words, this week one of us had a sign saying 'Nazi scum'. Their speakers this week included a man who was fired from the military for his neo-Nazi links and a fake priest who's been posting 88 in response to 14 online.

a cardboard sign saying Nazi scum with another sign taped below it saying Nazi is not a protected characteristic

Yeah, like they'll still kill a lot of people but god they're just cringe AF
fionaswriting.bsky.social
Any other crip protesters got recommendations for gear or solutions? My stuff is mainly kludged together but willing to invest a wee bit in things that might actually help.

(weird moment from today: a fash with a megaphone yelling 'you need a stick to walk! You are a disabled human!'
..... Yes?)

If these protests are going to keep going I'm going to need to get a lightweight folding chair and adapt my signs - my hips and shoulders are absolutely fucked and I'm going to need the strong pain meds tonight. The colder it gets the more supports I'll need.

It's all very Kylo Ren - they're a long way from the scary monsters they're trying to imitate.

So the other guy immediately pivots to 'I'd rather be a Nazi than one of you'. And then they tried to complain about our sign again.

So that's where things are in Aberdeen.

Then they moved venue and yelled at us that we just call people we disagree with Nazis, and we pointed at the actual Nazi they'd welcomed in, who immediately started shouting '1488! 1488! "The future belongs to me!" [Hitler youth song from the Sound Of Music]' and then a whole speech in German.

So of course they sent the police over to us to try to get us to take down the Nazi scum sign because it was... Wait for it... a hate crime. Because they still think hate crime about insults and not harm.

So we added 'Nazi is not a protected characteristic'. And they got even more upset.

BREAKING: The Home Office is giving police new powers to restrict repeat protests like pro-Palestine marches.

Police can consider the ‘cumulative impact’ of protests on an area and could ban the protest / force it to move elsewhere.

Do you have a recommendation?

This. Is. Why. I. Paint.
"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via Al video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people."

There’s also a big distinction between harassment of vulnerable people on social media & protest to powerful people on social media about how power is being wielded — and you’ve conflated that here. People complaining to you on this platform is almost always the latter. (I know there are extremes.)

It's been so weird lately - trying to get people to understand that not everyone opposing Israel is doing it because they believe in liberation and oppose genocide. People in general are so bad at working with any complexity.

So if the Nazis could give it a rest for a while, I'd appreciate it.

I'm wrestling with an activism decision and really could do with a clear head. I'm also wrestling with a professional decision. I nearly cried during my panel when I began to make my standard point about how only two people ever see my bad days and realised it's down to one now.
fionaswriting.bsky.social
God I am not emotionally stable enough to be meeting this moment right now. I started crying in the supermarket, had a panic attack at a protest, almost missed a panel appearance because I lost track of days. All my standard protocols are on the fritz.

The Aberdeen Hotel-Shouting Team has managed to combine the 14 Words (global Nazi slogan) with a poppy banner celebrating infamous antifascists. Incredible work.
photo of pre-protest barriers draped with far right banners including one saying 'BeCause HUMza Thinks SCOTLAND IS TOO WHITE WE MUST SECURE THE EXISTANCE OF OUR PEOPle FOR AND A Future for WHITE CHILDREN!' and one with a picture of a remembrance poppy and silhouettes of soldiers. there are also ones saying 'anti racism just means anti white' and 'immigration referendum now'

Chanda is 100% right. Read this. It’s a 15-minute piece because you’re going to want to slow down and enjoy the language. Compared to the slop the author masterfully derides, this is unvarnished poetry written by someone who very much loves the English language.

Quotes can’t do the whole justice.

YES! THIS on GenAI!

Please read this absolutely splendid piece of writing that had me cheering, a little bit weepy, and writing in the margins:

"An extraordinary amount of money is spent by the AI industry to ensure that acquiescence is the only plausible response. But marketing is not destiny."
Large Language Muddle | The Editors
The AI upheaval is unique in its ability to metabolize any number of dread-inducing transformations. The university is becoming more corporate, more politically oppressive, and all but hostile to the ...
