BREAKING

Dr. Jane Goodall has died. She was 91.

It is impossible to sum up the impact she has had on our world and on science in a social media post.

She lived a long and incredible life but I am devastated.

This paper does a great job with a "It's a Wonderful Life" scenario about NIH, supposing the consequences of the bottom 40% of the funding NIH grants never existed.

tl:dr The world would lose a lot, but directly and indirectly

Everyone should read this. The take home: we will be less heathy if we cut NIH funding.

"the benefits of NIH research in general are wide and diffuse. A very large number of advances—roughly one in two during the 21st century—are linked to NIH grants that are cut in our counterfactual scenario."

"in the largest sample of medical advances for which we have good data...we found extensive connections between medical advances and research that was funded by grants that would have been cut if the NIH budget was sharply reduced."

We can keep going but the lesson I take from this is that the administration and the NIH leadership have decided to shrink the biomedical research workforce and shrink the scope of the science being performed in this country.

As a first year MD/PhD student, I sat on a panel for high school seniors who were interested in STEM.

During the Q&A they commented on how long the dual degree track seemed and I hyperbolically joked that I may graduate med school with some of them… 🤣

then I realized it was actually possible… 😅😳

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

It costs a lot less to house people.

A few years ago, I watched as two Finnish police officers stopped to help a woman on the street. One of the officers explained to me that Finland had decided to end homelessness.

On top of that, they provide social services to the people they give homes too.

Guess what? It's a good investment.

This is the list of NIH ICs which lack permanent Directors. It will be very interesting to see who is willing to take the roles, assuming NIH tries to fill the positions. (NIMH has an active search)
