this is exactly what digital illiteracy is.

and in 2018, only 40% of US adults. were digitally literate (according to the Pew Research Center.)

God knows what it is now post pandemic and with generative AI running amok.
People too often conflate consuming media with becoming educated on a subject. People will watch a whole ass video by some rando, and walk away from it without cross referencing any sources or even checking the validity of said sources. We really are just a nation of suckers at this point.

Lane's portfolio is terrific. Take a peep and help an artist out.
My schedule for next month is pretty barren, so, if you need wild art that you won't find anywhere else on your next project, consider hiring me? Covers, sequentials, character design, album covers, I do it all!

I also offer commissions if you don't have a project

I think a lot about what my creative practice outside of my design day job should be. More and more I find myself mentally working on comics. Doesn’t seem so silly to me anymore.
I just want to make silly little comics. To pour my hopes and dreams and ideas out on paper with the help of my friends and friends-to-be.

This is why I stay on social media. Bread wrapping paper.
This wrapping paper turns everything into bread 🥖

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

Day whatever of books that affected me. One of my kids recently discovered a copy of the graphic novel version of The Iliad from @garethhinds.bsky.social in the school library. Artists and librarians who make literature accessible for kids who aren't big readers are my heroes.

Day 6 of stories that impacted me: Amy Tan's novel, The Joy Luck Club.

“Citing your sources is an act of resistance” is brilliant. 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
just blurted out in class "yes, you have to cite where you got your info. in a world in which lying loudly is the only thing that seems to get rewarded, citing your sources is an act of resistance" and folks, I really believe that.

Reminder Superman is not a power fantasy, he's an altruism fantasy.

The idea of someone with godlike powers using them solely for good (with an antagonist who is a billionaire, who by definition do the opposite) was dreamt up by Jewish kids in the 30s and its just as if not more relevant now.

Day 5 of stories that made an impact on me: the first Stephen King book I read was Four Past Midnight. It was a gift from a friend in middle school. Novellas were a brilliant discovery. The Sun Dog creeped 13 year old me out. #ReadersOfBluesky

Day 4 of stories that made an impact on me: The Alchemist. A favorite professor shared this with us. It reminds me that things aren’t always as bleak underneath as they appear on the surface. #ReadersOfBluesky #BooksOfBluesky

Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends:

1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration;

2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you;

3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

Day 3 of stories that made an impact on me: The Hobbit. The opening paragraph is still one of my favorite things ever. Samwise was the hero of the entire story. #ReadersOfBluesky #BooksOfBluesky

Day 2 of Stories that Impacted Me: Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. I read these as a kid. They’re fairly dark but not Grimm 🥁#ReadersOfBluesky #BooksOfBluesky

Since @gavroche.org is doing a book challenge, I’ll hop on the trend. 20 tales that shaped or impacted me, Day 1: Ursula K. LeGuin’s short story “The Poacher” was the first time I recall alternate viewpoints in fairy tales. Powerful. #BooksOfBluesky #storytelling #ReadersOfBluesky

Another @imagecomics.bsky.social win. I picked this up at my comic shop on the monthly trip with one of my kiddos. As someone who's struggled with weight, it resounded deeply. The subject matter was treated so well that I got a little teary. #ReadMoreComics #YourMommaReadsComics

What a welcome! I've admired @alancumming.bsky.social ever since seeing him on a magazine cover in the late 90s in my favorite bookshop.

I’m late to comic books. I wasn’t allowed to read them as a kid, so now I make sure to haul my kids to the shop on a regular basis. This book looks interesting. Anyone read it?
