New Home Office impact assessment finds that cutting skilled and social care visas will cost the UK up to £10 billion with a central estimate of -£5.4 billion.

It would be good if this got even a fraction of the coverage devoted to the endless debate about boats, flags and Turkish barber shops

Why stop at asking LLMs to generate references for you? The logical response if you can't find an article reference generated by LLM in a library is to get the LLM to generate the article for you, as it is clearly all-wise and knows everything. Job done.
Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.
I wish a notice like this wasn't necessary.

It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the 12/19/42 cover of @newyorker.com, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions in the US. Gas and tire rationing had begun earlier that year.🗃️

But he has his head waxed and lubed to make it easier get it up the hoop of whichever authoritarian leader he has to obsequiously charm that week.

New from 404 Media: ChatGPT told a violent stalker to continue running his misogynistic and threat-filled podcast despite the “haters,” and to visit more gyms to find women. The man stalked women in multiple states, including touching and following from work

I love the fact that the Telegraph tried to cover the Rachel Reeves chess 'truth' story, and had to include the fact that even their own chess correspondent thinks it is utter bollocks.
I think if i won the under-14 title for the British Women’s Chess Association (BWCA) Girls Championship, you would probably hear me say quite a bit i was the champion. The Telegraph's own chess correspondent points out here why Reeves's is quite right to do so www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

As I have noted before, almost half of everyone ever born died in childhood. There are people alive today who were already alive when this stopped being true for everyone born in the future.

All of pre-20th-century history is an emotional foreign country, for this reason alone.
Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.
