Middle school science teacher, entomologist, snow lover in NC. Begrudging Swiftie and jazz fan because of my family. Beyoncé lover in my soul. Cornell alum (wtf??) and NC State
I taught 8th graders about water turning into hydronium and hydroxide today. Then acids and bases. Then the pH scale.

Then I pulled out a bajillion expired pH strips from deep in a classroom drawer and told them we’re going to dip them in whatever food they bring to school.

I am pumped.

Join the four rehearsal, one performance women’s choir put on by a kickass folk singer with women who also kick ass. I promise. It’s worth it.

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

Walking into a room with a big ol’ whopper of a cockroach in my own house, minding its own business, still gives me the heebie jeebies. We just got home from a week long trip and temps dropped.

House centipede? Yay!

Spider? Sure!

Mature Periplaneta? Get Out Now!! (I got it out)

Even if it’s not Tressie McMillan Cottom being referred to here, the idiocy that people bring to her and then Keep. On. Holding. a stupendously vapid take while she destroys them is wild.

It’s very reminiscent of gotcha conversations with middle school boys. It’s a type.
Some of you really like bringing soft, empty thinking to the virtual doorstep of one of the smartest scholars working. It’s FASCINATING.

N.K. Jemison’s “The Fifth Season” is SO GOOD. I’m 1/3 through and I want everyone I know to read it with me and do nothing else. Thank you @scalzi.com for bringing her work to my attention.

There were new character limits on our report card comments this trimester and I found out AFTER I had written 93 personalized comments all over the limit in a spreadsheet and was copy-pasting them in. Yay.

Also shout out to the lady on the plane today who briefly discussed the merits of an EdD vs PhD in education and her trajectory from science teacher to education professor. Quality of the program, career goals, lower ceilings with the EdD, and more. It was super helpful!

I (recently) told the customer service people that their niche in the Durham/Chapel Hill store is designed like that because it used to be photo processing and a damned laundromat in the stores in Rochester and she was just like “Ok. Thanks!”. Maybe I expected applause?
Niche food-related post, but it's important to remember that in 1993, Danny Wegman, CEO of Wegmans grocery stores, announced a partnership with Xerox, with one of the most powerful mullet-tie combos in history

My hill to die on is that anyone who works with older middle schoolers long enough will learn that it is an incredible age but the first pass as a middle schooler is garbage and the first pass as a teacher is guaranteed extra hot garbage.

Middle schoolers are amazing and we owe them better.
Just your friendly middle school teacher reminder that 7th graders will burst into spontaneous games of tag if you give them the 4 minute opportunity to “Do whatever you want. Cartwheels, tag, I don’t care.” while you let everyone (yourself included) burn off bad vibes walking around a field.

I left an asshole’s lab who treated me like garbage once I got my NSF GRF award. I wrote the proposal by myself while I was his tech. He told me to stop acting like I was smarter than everyone else. He wasn’t hitting on me but turned on me when he realized I was, in fact, possibly smarter than him.
If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

To read later
A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

I know Erin Hunter isn’t one person but the Warrior Cats (girl fandom) universe and the Wings of Fire author breakout of Tui T. Sutherland continues to be absolutely WILD to me. Both the scale of its popularity and how neither have had blockbuster adaptations but Dogman (boy fandom) has.

Just say no to rotavirus. Noooooo. Be gone. Even with the toddler and the big kid being vaccinated, it wiped out the whole house.

Cars continues to be a top tier middle schooler movie. Got 8th grade boys that need to want to hang out in your room during non-instructional time? Cars

Also Paddington. And for girl buy-in (and boys like it too) Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse
