I try not to be judgmental about people's looks or cosmetic treatments and surgery but people whose faces end up looking like a knock-off barbie was left on the radiator have a lot of nerve talking about brightly coloured hair

Jenny Nicholson tweet continues to not miss

How come major film studios keep being like Jared Leto may have allegations, but at least he looks weird, stars in box office bombs, and is not a good actor

first, go experience things in life. hold a baby and smell the top of their head. go swimming in a river. make love to your partner.

next, sit down and watch a horror movie, and really think through what it would mean if it happened to you and yours

A long time ago you talked about re-sensitizing yourself to horror art (books/films/comics etc) and I'm curious how you'd recommend going about that? I'd like to become easier to scare again...

what's the thing about creativity that nobody talks about but you feel is especially important?
gaycannibalism.bsky.social
As a writer I'm very 'internal', I LOVE to explore why they make those decisions, and also to put someone with a specific personality trait in a situation that'll REALLY work against them. For example, a manipulative control freak in a situation where they have no power or influence...

Agreed, and more than this, the presence of therapyspeak tends to undergird the premise that fiction should be reassuring and redemptive. This is, itself, bullshit
rowan.monster
I'd really appreciate if writers these days took a look at their characters doing therapyspeak and whether that's appropriate for their work and their world.

By "therapyspeak" I mean speaking like this: "This is the emotion I'm feeling, and feeling that emotion makes me want to act in a way"
gaycannibalism.bsky.social
And also, please, like you do [most logical thing] when you're the one in a stressful, emotional, difficult situation 🙄

that makes sense. I just find a character who does the 'less ideal' things far more interesting.

The marketized Jordan Peterson's formulation of Judeo-Bolshevism of the fundamentalist paradigm is nothing but pocket watching and an endless implosion into the inclusive image of the self.

Like the episode where the Itchy and Scratchy creators made a cartoon to Marge Simpson's specifications.

Hmm, that makes me MORE interested in the property
gaycannibalism.bsky.social
I don't really care about that, honestly. I think bad decisions make for good plot. I'm not writing for people who write tv tropes headscratchers.

Exactly this! Now I'm no longer in my teens and early twenties I vastly prefer friends who are low conflict and low drama, with high emotional intelligence.

In fiction I want to read about the exact opposite! Give me people who burn down their exes house!

Emotionally intelligent people are better to be around in real life, but if you write all the characters in your fiction as emotionally intelligent it's gonna be boring

Though, it might be fun to put one of the pathologically nice people in a situation where it keep getting them in worse and worse trouble...

Like, ok, yeah, what if they were, ok, so where's the story? If everyone is nice then everyone is just nice to each other until I, the reader, die of boredom
gaycannibalism.bsky.social
And I love my dullest friend (am often the dullest friend) and am glad they had a good weekend (and thoroughly enjoyed my own weekend of 'go to library, do big shop, visit knitting shop, gentle walk in nature if weather allows') but it doesn't make for a good book
gaycannibalism.bsky.social
Fundamentall, stories are kind of boring (to me) if they're about mostly reasonable people doing the sensible thing. You need weirdos making bad decisions or it's just your dullest friend describing their weekend
