Both KOSA + COPPA 2.0 advanced through the committee on a partisan basis by Republicans BUT the fight isn’t over yet.

We’ll keep you posted on new developments. Next committee meeting on these bills will likely happen in January. In the meantime, keep the pressure on!

House E+C hearing takeaways:

- Dems voted against KOSA due to the duty of care + against COPPA 2.0 due to preemption of state laws.

- With KOSA, the House is concerned with FTC overreach to police online free speech. This is a good thing + a sign that your advocacy is working!

So many lawmakers are completely out of touch with how the internet actually works.

We prepped a page with resources and FAQ’s on Section 230 and why tampering with it is a bad idea.

They would do well to read it. www.whatissection230.org

LGBTQ+ people’s rights are being stripped globally in areas where online ID checks are being implemented. This is not fear-mongering- the name of the game is control. The goal is to censor us off the internet + trans people are the canaries in the coal mine.

Experts tell Dia Kayyali and Jasmine Mithani that age verification, sold as a fix for kids’ online safety, expands surveillance and deepens discrimination.

Remember when the internet wasn't awful? We can go back to that.

Some friends and I have released the Resonant Computing Manifesto: a call to bring back such a time, to see if we can bring back a world where technology works for us, rather than against us.

...Eliminating Section 230 would literally be the death of free speech on the Internet.

Sites (like here on Bluesky) would literally have to manually review every single post before it's allowed to be posted to make sure it's not something that will get them sued into oblivion.

They also plan to pass laws banning use of VPNs. If you're a healthcare provider using telehealth, you use VPNs to protect patient private data and ensure the network is secure. KOSA threatens so much in terms of accessibility unrelated to stopping children from accessing adult websites

@warren.senate.gov how many times do we need to explain to you that the aim for KOSA has been to erase queer and trans people from the internet - this has been VERY clear from the start!

@warren.senate.gov just co-sponsored KOSA again 🤦🏽‍♀️

You CANNOT claim to be an ally to the LGTBQ community and support this awful bill. Your office blatantly ignored our Boston coalitions pleas, so let’s see how you feel about those phones being melted. CALL HER!
This Trans Day of Remembrance we’re holding the memory of countless trans lives lost to bigotry and hatred, and fighting like hell to preserve trans lives still with us today!

Trans people deserve to be seen + celebrated, not erased. Trans people deserve real allyship, not censorship.

Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from.

tl;dr: Only CEOs want this. Tell them how much you hate it. Be loud, email, call, @, post. You will kill this.

🧵⬇️
The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

Those who claim that online ID checks are to “protect the children” are lying to you, full stop! Not only will they open the gateway to more censorship, but it will also increase identity frauds even more.

The Discord leak is a perfect example of this!

#1 Remove AGE VERIFICATION
#2 Remove duty of care are those requirements are vague and ripe for abuse.

KOSA is never about protecting kids. It’s anti-queer and about making sure kids don’t have access to information they need to survive - from health basics to knowing they are not alone and not broken. And it will destroy the internet as we know it.
🚨‼️As of yesterday KOSA is at 64 cosponsors with @vanhollen.senate.gov + @kim.senate.gov - who claim to support LGTBQ+ rights but are clearly okay with supporting legislation that’ll censor us off the internet- newly signed on.
