Teacher and dad. As a student once wrote of me in an evaluation, “CAN BE FUNNY AT TIMES." I believe that we will win.

"I'm the girlfriend of one of the founders of antifa" sounds like a hilariously inept FBI effort to infiltrate Unicorn Riot or something.

Never saw this one! We were just flipping around on Criterion so I'll put it in the queue.

Jack Posobiec explicitly says that "Antifa" dates back to the Weimar Republic, explicitly acknowledging that this administration is opposed to those who resisted the arrival of Adolf Hitler in Power.

Ellis rules that the plaintiffs have standing for their case. She cites the "ongoing and sustained record of conduct" by federal agents gathered over the last month.

She further finds the plaintiffs have plausibly shown feds have "frustrated" efforts to "protect journalist safety."

Makes me think of something the great abolitionist scholar and activist Ruth Wilson Gilmore said in an online event, essentially that what differentiates (most of) us on the left from the right is that we genuinely want our worst political enemies to have all the good things we want for ourselves.

My son loves this game, and I have watched him play it, but can you please explain what you mean here so I can look cool in front of him (maybe it's just that the music is dope).

The phrase “immediately search their workstations…for any records pertaining to the disappearance of Amelia Earhart” kills me.

“Let me actually pick up this monitor and see—oh SHIT!!! Look at this crazy photograph. And it says it was taken in 1938, one year AFTER she disappeared!!! Oh man.”

Oh I'm sure! My point was just that there's a strong chance they'll go after more radical folks (meaning people to the left of Bernie, for example) doing perfectly legal protest but demonize them as socialists (which will be true) and then it will really be incumbent on mainline Dems to stand up.

Of course there are plenty of leftists in Texas (probably zero of whom are in terror cells), and it does feel like we’re reaching that stage where leftist groups and individuals will be targeted. If it happens, “normal regular Democrats” will need to be out in the streets protesting in huge numbers.

for those of you who are serious about understanding the eugenic lineage of the whole AGI movement, on the other hand, you can peruse some of the resources at www.dair-institute.org/projects/tes...

The array of utopian ideologies that power Silicon Valley's elite is ultimately bleakly eugenicist.

He was always going to do this. Chicagoans have not rioted, so the administration just lied and said we have. We have not attacked ICE agents, so they just lied and said we did. There was no chaos here, so they created chaotic scenes by attacking people and filmed that shit.

Grant's new mailbag on how you study the history of punk will be a great fit in undergrad classrooms. The footnotes alone are an absolute goldmine.

Of course, I was not suggesting “AI” won’t continue to be pushed—even the scammiest aspects. I’m just saying it’s good if there’s a broader perception that so-called “AI” is often a scam and/or something that we should not like or use, as opposed to it being viewed as a magical solution.
geoffthejohnson.bsky.social
I think that’s all true, but I would also say that it would be an unalloyed good if some of these major “AI” enterprises collapsed and came to be viewed as a phony house of cards by much of the general public in the end. “AI” being widely perceived as scammy/predatory by default would be helpful.

The majority of my students work a lot each week in addition to going to school. It's absolutely a factor in their ability to do sustained reading, and frankly it's a reason I assign less reading than I did when I first started teaching and/or allocate class time for students to read.
lollardfish.bsky.social
This is true for students too. Yes there are many factors impacting student reading, but working 30+ hours a week to be able to afford college is definitely one of them.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

This is a good step in the right direction. More cities should follow suit and if governors had any gumption, they would work to take it to the state level.

HAPPENING NOW — This morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order establishing “ICE-free zones.”

“That means that city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as grounds for these raids,” Johnson said to applause.

It's a pretty big deal that the NYC Bar Association--one of the most prominent and respected bar associations in the country--is accusing the President of ordering the "unlawful summary execution," i.e. murder--of civilians in violation of US and international law. www.nycbar.org/press-releas...

Police violence is part of our national fabric. You will not find us diminishing that. It's hard to believe any cops could be worse than a department who ran a torture black site. But DHS is entirely unleashed and unaccountable. They will kill more people by the end of this month if not stopped.

A law will be made that says cable news can only be broadcast in outer space (and only for like an hour per day—max).
