This picture has been making the rounds again, and is being misidentified again.

This is a GOOSEFISH.

This is NOT a tasselled wobbegong shark.

It’s a great pic. I get why people are very excited about it. But it’s as easy to give it the right name as the wrong one.

iOS 7’s UI redesign wasn’t the first example of flat design language, Microsoft had been doing flat Metro for years before

Similarly, Liquid Glass is just a re-imagining of another Microsoft flagship initiative, Aero Glass for Vista

wrote some words about "when is performative protest meaningful if it leads to worse outcomes than capitulation"

(my answer: idk, but it's not always worthless, even in loss conditions.)
i'm citing 1000x resist because it was written by a team who made the choice and wanted very strongly to inspire others in similar situations to make a similar choice.

idk much about HK protests, but "we still felt this was the best path even though we lost" is an important takeaway

I suspect that we really do need to emphasize a much more social learning/collaborative knowledge approach to this versus individual understanding, that's the piece that software culture doesn't like to admit though!

Connection to the users and their desire paths is the most important path of working in security and nobody goddamn does it. You are gonna make compromises. And they're all gonna be worth it. Because you understand what they want and you're gonna deliver it and they're gonna stop doing stupid shit.

I was not prepared for this, what’s the best way to learn the broad varieties?

My favorite example of that was in Due South, set in Chicago, filmed in Toronto, except when the characters went to Toronto, and they filmed in Chicago.

🇨🇳🇺🇸 Throughout my career, all of my best work is written in fellowship and collaboration with Chinese friends and colleagues. So it’s really perverse to read about a proposed ban between American and Chinese scientists.

Every single trans writer or artist can see themselves in the story of Isabel Fall. Especially if your writing is subversive or transgressive in either way.

I can't stand the way she was treated, and I can't stand how many otherwise good people were easily tricked into attacking her.
Sitting here thinking about Isabel Fall, author of "Helicopter Story." I truly, genuinely hope she was eventually able to find SOME way to be a version of her genuine trans self. Maybe she's living offline or calling herself a different name... IDK. We failed her and I'm still angry about it.
