While I’ve been away, I was creating things including this scarecrow that now watches over my garden through all seasons.

So everyone’s come aboard? I just wanted to check in since there’s been activity/notifications. I’ll be trying to go through new followers soon & see whom else is here.

Holy cow!

I pulled into my driveway & look who flew onto my front porch! Chipmunk did a clever evading maneuver, but the juvie Cooper's Hawk checked all around just in case there was something else for lunch. (Apologies to my phone camera for rude things I might have said in the past.) 🌿🪶

Nov 1 is still Spooky Season as far as I'm concerned, so please enjoy this spooky "face" that NASA's Juno mission spotted during a recent flyby of Jupiter 💀. JunoCam captured this image of the gas giant's storms & turbulent cloud cover from a distance of ~4,800 miles 🔭🧪

And just like that, the hard frost & snow halted the extended summer growth of the zinnias & hydrangeas. 🌱

Been absent on socials due in part to my beloved pup, Monkey Boo, having a setback with her health. To honour the time I have left with her, I carved “Eye Love Boo” in various squashes for Halloween (my idea of a love letter).

Wearing a mask in a setting where you are the only one is kinda fascinating. Like wearing a giant ink blot on your face and watching what people project upon it.

being a historian of disability and public health these past few years, the refusal to acknowledge that eugenicist justifications for accepting the ongoing disability and deaths are eugenicist, the refusal of our responsibility to each other, didnt surprise me, but it kind of broke something in me.
This is so real. I’ve reported on this over the years in many forms. Coral reef scientists. Conservationists caring for endlings. Public health workers in the pandemic. Journalists covering all the above. The people bearing witness are not okay.
One unexpected thing in my qualitative study w natural scientists (one-hour interviews) is how deeply, deeply sad the climate scientists are. They say things like "you have enough information from us, why won't anyone act?" -- the psychological distress these people are enduring is very great.

Spent yesterday warming by the fireplace during a day long power outage. Cooked a simple lunch over the coals. Listened to the rain & some Nick Drake. Not the worst way to spend a cold October Sunday.

I worked at the place that shot Hobo v2.0; one of the production secrets was that for scenes where Hobo opened doors, or pushed elevator buttons, they had a taxidermied dog paw on a stick for closeups.
Today in 1979, The Littlest Hobo debuted. The show aired until March 7, 1985, for a total of 114 episodes.
It was the 2nd Littlest Hobo show, with the first airing from 1963 to 1965.

Shark Week, the biggest stage in marine biology, has so many more men than women that there are *more men named Mike* then women who are featured in more than one episode. 🧪🦑
