Damn am I proud to be a Californian. We aren’t perfect here but I have so much love for the people in my state and how we’re showing up right now. Also, a major shoutout to the people in other places who are standing with us in solidarity. This is going to be a long road but I believe in us all.

Ah, The church and the nobility have teamed up to sell indulgences to us poor wretches. Definitely not to extract more capital, no, no, it’s for the benefit of our unclean souls! How very predictably fucking feudalist of them.

DOGE cut a bunch of funds from state & local public health, specifically around infectious disease. I’m a county infectious disease epi. I make less than 6 figures in the SF Bay Area. If I lose my job, my husband & I both lose our healthcare because he’s self employed. Never felt this hollow before.

Democrats are the thing I’m second most sick of after Republicans.

US politics have been in desperate need of an overhaul for a long time but I’m at least grateful that more people understand that now (???)

We need multiple viable parties that represent much more of the political spectrum.

I’ve been staying off social media lately to get work done- I’m in the first stages of a big analysis and getting pretty close to launching the wastewater surveillance project I’ve been working on.

It rained really hard last night, and god, the sound of it was so beautiful that I had to share.

Hey! My name is Ally. I’m an epidemiologist and occasional creative writer, currently working on a sci fi short story.

The concept came to me a few days ago, so no title yet. I’ve already written quite a bit despite how busy work has been. Writing has really been helping me process reality!
Hello #WeeknightWriters! Come on in, introduce yourself and your WIP, and let us know how your writing week is going! Or not going, that's valid too

In general, it’s a good time to try to spend less money, and to buy locally when you can. I know those things aren’t possible for everyone but do what you’re able to 💗

I’m at an all time low today. Usually work helps, because I love my job, but everything feels so insurmountably dark right now. I’m really grateful for all of the scientists, creative people, and activists I follow here. You’re the light in the darkness that’s keeping me going right now, thanks 💗

I have screamed into a pillow so many fucking times this week. Very grateful for creative writing, long runs, audiobooks, my cats, playing guitar, and singing at the top of my lungs in the shower. The occasional moments when I lose myself in writing code at work are nice too.

1: Super important! I know everything is dark and shitty right now but just keep this in the back of your mind. Respiratory season is extra shitty this time around in general so mask in public spaces, avoid touching your face, and wash your hands frequently.

I hope the people who are now rushing to get their kids vaccinated come to understand what public health officials have been saying forever: vaccines are safe & immensely effective at preventing death/severe illness from preventable diseases. My heart breaks for the kids who are suffering right now.
As the measles outbreak in Texas keeps spreading, parents who previously chose not to vaccinate their children are now lining up to get their kids the shots needed to protect them from the serious illness.
As Texas measles outbreak grows, parents are choosing to vaccinate kids
At least 124 people, mostly babies, children and teens, have been infected. Eighteen people have been hospitalized.

This was a bit of a disturbing read, but the writing is so good and my brain is so fried from this week that I also laughed a lot.

But really, you should read this and encourage others to do so.

Ok the DIY parody one is hilarious.
In my city there is one cybertruck and one DIY parody of a cybertruck and the parody truck has become a local celebrity. Meanwhile, I always wish I had some rotten eggs to throw at the tesla whenever I see it.
