It was never really about cutting overall spending - that was the grift. It was destroying disliked programs, securing lucrative contracts, stealing valuable data, and further decreasing trust in government - all of which were quite successful

The aesthetic power of 60 minutes: They can take footage (even of events the Trump administration itself publicized back in March) and present it as evidence of a crime. This is necessary if broad swaths of the American public are going to ever acknowledge the horrors occurring at CECOT.
