Well, this is lovely. Good blocklists and a lack of nazi wannabes is a refreshing change.
I love this, All the details, the little elephants 🥰
Got meself a wee project which took up my whole evening, I think people call this kind of thing a "timeline cleanse"?

This looks Amazing 🤩 trailer in thread.
Someone made an actual 90 min animated movie called Lesbian Space Princess and I was like, this could be really good or really bad, but I'm betting it's pretty damn good since I don't think a bad one would get the support to be made.

So I watched the credits.

OMG, I'm all in. This is amazeballs.

Always interesting to see language evolving with technology. Good thread.
A 'retronym' is a term consisting of a noun and a modifier which specifies the original meaning of the noun.

Many retronyms have come about due to technological advances.

The Voyager one is something special.
Guys guys guys, I found the archive of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (it's not an achievement, they've not hidden them) - you can watch every single one since they started televising them in the 60s:

I love watching them every year, now I can see them all!

Thread full of new book recommendations to follow up. 🥳
On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

Cis people who want to complain about being excluded: gtfo
Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?

Biology is wild and awesome, genetics continues to throw up new questions.
The more you know. We are all chimeras at a very small level. You likely have cells in your body from your mother and your siblings that were born before you. How this chimerism influences your immune system is beginning to be unraveled. #Science #ScienceSunday
Some of your cells are not genetically yours — what can they tell us about life and death?
A tiny population of cells that are passed across the placenta between mother and baby challenge basic tenets of human immunology.

the terracotta warriors are literally painted, by the way, it's why most of them remain in the pits - they lost their color when exposed, and Chinese archaeologists and other scientists have been trying to figure out a way to excavate the rest while keeping the paint intact
Just realized that Emperor Qin Shi Huang's "Terracotta Army" of clay soldiers he kept in a vault in like 200 BC make him the first Warhammer Guy. he got some disposable income and started painting minis. totally get it

Fabulous thread with good art and a lot of whimsical back stories. 🎏
This evening one of the very kind con organizers took us to the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo, which is amazing and you should go and Gustav Vigeland was extraordinarily talented and probably does not deserve the narrative I constructed looking at his work.

But Bluesky! You deserve EVERYTHING!

TIL that rubella and German measles are the same thing 🤦🏻
ooh i know this one, the German scientists who first named it 'little red' or'rubella' because they thought it was a milder version of the same measles. English doctors decided to do that thing they do by ignoring what the Not English words mean and said no to 'little red'and called it German

Cool information on the Irish Celt Solstice traditions and some common mix-ups.
There’s much mumbo-jumbo about the Solstice & ersatz ‘Celtic’ religious practise about this feast. It can be quite painful hearing self-appointed foreign ‘believers’ combine everything from the Tuatha Dé Dannan, to Nazi mythology, in their ignorant claims. So here’s some factual info on Grianstad!
How to mark the Winter Solstice's shortest day and longest night
Just as it was for our ancestors, the winter solstice is a time for rituals and reflections

Amazing thread about cat science and breeds. Feels on brand that dog DNA is easily tracked and cats are keeping their secrets. Bonus: lots of cure kitty pictures.
I would like to articulate one of the BIGGEST misconceptions about cat breed genetics by talking about the NEBELUNG!

An extremely rare breed with only SIX(6) in the whole US, and no breeders, yet one that thousands of folk online are convinced they own.

Your cat is NOT any breed, and that's okay.

Murder Mary Poppins is the perfect description of my favourite fictional detectives.
my favorite thing about the benoit blanc movies is that they aren't really about benoit blanc. he is not grappling with demons from his past. we are not getting flashbacks to the husband whose murder he never solved. he just shows up and does his job like mary poppins for homicides

DS9 Trek is best Trek, I will die on this hill. 🖖🏻
One of the best-sketched characters in an incredibly character-rich show: a fascist whose (potentially real!) redeeming qualities are continually undercut by his monumental pride, bigotry, entitlement and pettiness
The most realistic scene in DS9 is when Gul Dukat whined about how the Bajorans never erected a statue in his honor. A prophetic text.
