Does the news reflect what we die from?
The image presents a comparison of the leading causes of death in the United States for 2023 and the media coverage these causes receive from three news outlets: The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Fox News.

In the footer, it notes the data sources, indicating that the information is based on media mentions from Media Cloud (2025) and death data from the US CDC (2025) and the Global Terrorism Index, with a clarification that values are normalized to sum to 100%.

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

‚This isn’t about money: it’s about how we can provide the best and safest service while struggling with too few doctors and growing demand. No matter how many times we reiterate that tinkering with access doesn’t increase capacity, it seems that no one at NHS England is listening.‘

Busy day in pratice yesterday and it was great. My patients were <9 to >90. Every system covered (respiratory, cardiology, endocrine, gastro, psychiatry, neuro, ENT, gynae....)
I know many parts of the NHS are struggling but yesterday my bit worked.
GPs moan a lot but it can be a very satisfying job

I attended Reading Meeting throughout my childhood, which has a very lovely cemetery in the same style. My nephew called it the grave garden, a name which has stuck.

Finally!!! The real scandal of the asylum hotels. Why, instead of shining the light on these parasites, months were spent on demonising vulnerable people at their mercy?

Feargal Sharkey in the other place makes a great point...

"It is difficult, if not impossible to combine the citizens' rights and interests and the private enterprise's interests, because the private enterprise aims at its natural and justified objective, the biggest possible profit."

#water
I was recently reminded that the New River Company, supplier of London's drinking water from 1619, along with a host of other water companies were all nationalised in 1902 simply because, as the former President of the Board of Trade Joseph Chamberlain put it:

"It is difficult, if not impossible to combine the citizens' rights and interests and the private enterprise's interests, because the private enterprise aims at its natural and justified objective, the biggest possible profit."

What changed?

Sunday's actions were all about trying - and failing - and trying - and failing to deploy the National Guard to Portland and Oregon. It's really confusing, so I break it down in this video...

💔 This is Omar Hayek. He was a kind man, the sole provider for his family, & one who brought the highest level of professionalism to his work as an occupational therapist for @msf.ca.

This morning, Omar became our 14th colleague killed in an #Israeli attack.

I hadn't come across the ReFuk abbreviation - is it because their main players caused major damage through Brexit and want to inflict more?

My review of the third autism-Tylenol study RFK Jr mentioned is out now.

If you weighed in on "what proportion of kids have neurodevelopmental disorders" yesterday, this paper is why I asked the question. Most of you will be very surprised by their answer!

RFK Jr's third Tylenol-autism study is just run-of-the-mill bad research
I’m reading through RFK Jr’s supposed evidence that Tylenol causes autism and it’s not looking good for his conclusions.

She was arrested for holding a sign reading:

“I do not support the proscription of Palestine Action”

How that would warrant arrest is very unclear. I wonder if the police here even understand the boundaries of the bizarre law they’ve been forced to enforce.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Many indigenous people of South America don't have much facial hair either - hence they got the name too.
I also don't buy from the breastless company - there are alternatives.

I learnt recently that amazon means 'without breast'. The story I was told is: the Scythians did have beards so the Greeks thought they must be women. But they were great archers, so they must have lopped off a breast. (Why they concluded 'breastless women' rather than 'beardless men' is a mystery.)
