Monday 15th September Agatha Miller was born on this day 1890 in Torquay, Devon. She wrote under the name Agatha Christie and is the one of the world’s best selling authors. More than 2 billion of her books have been sold, only the Bible and Shakespeare have sold more! Shortly before WWI Christie met Colonel Archie Christie and they married when he returned on leave in December 1914. She spent the war working as a nurse in Torquay, at this time she also wrote her first detective novel based around the character of Hercule Poirot a Belgian detective with a magnificent moustache. Perhaps she had met such a Belgian helping refugees from the war in Torquay. After the war she became a prolific author and she and Archie had their only child, Rosalind. However, in 1926 Archie asked for a divorce and Agatha became depressed. In December 1926 she went missing for 10 days, which became a real-life mystery for the press and public. She was eventually found in a Harrogate Hotel, 200 miles from where her abandoned car in Surrey. In 1930 she met and married archaeologist Max Mallowan, 13 years her junior. She accompanied him on many of his digs, visiting sites across Europe and North Africa, giving her inspiration for her books such as Murder on the Orient Express. In total she wrote 74 novels and many plays and short stories before her death in 1976. Have you ever read any Agatha Christie?
