Brazil approves the first vaccine against dengue. The disease killed 6000 Brazilians in 2024.

This is a really remarkable achievement. I got dengue in 2015, and even with the mild case I had, it was a really miserable experience.

I cannot tell you how many normal and non reactionary people I know who insist that crime is much worse today than in the 1990s. When I confront them with evidence it's like I am telling them that the earth is 800 years old or dogs can talk.

NO ONE FORMS POLITICAL IDEAS FROM WHAT THEY SEE IN THE WORLD.

THEY FORM POLITICAL IDEAS FROM WHAT THEY HEAR FROM OTHER PEOPLE.

There are many, many, many important implications of this!!

Too many people, when arguing, walk in just expecting deference from the other party. It's genuinely twelve year old behavior. I'm not going to lie down like a whipped dog just to make you feel better. You have to treat YOURSELF with respect to successfully demand it from others.

I'm very frustrated by people like this. I'm not saying LLMs are 'humanlike.' I'm rejecting the human frame as a standard altogether. Those are the assumption of others desperate to make me seem hopelessly anthropocentric - not mine. If people want to disagree, disagree with what I actually said.
Dont wanna get into an endless thing here, but a lot what you're saying feels like you're working backwards from a position that LLMs are humanlike. That's fine, but it's not justified by saying it's simply possible.

The schizophrenia example was mine. I'm saying we can't rule it out, but why

Guinea-Bissau rocked by coup.

Military officials in Guinea-Bissau say they have seized "total control" of the west African country, arresting its president, closing its borders and suspending its electoral process three days after general elections

The weird thing is, what's going to happen to folks like this author as the models get better, and as we learn how to use them better

These folks are massively cognitively captured. Irrevocably entwined in a status hierarchy

They are lost to the future. They're the brand new Cult of the Lost Cause
Let it be known that if you can't take the heat, don't stay in the kitchen.

Thanks. Reading this, it occurs to me that the AI industry needs a new story. Not "intelligence like ours but somehow better, faster, smarter" but "intelligence that grew out of what we fed it, but actually doesn't reason like we do - and that is good because we were stuck in bad loops."

Let's appreciate that the guy who also wrote this reacts to critiques by making completely false claims about chess, arguing with everything other than my actual arguments, and then condescending to me like a southern belle.

As I said earlier, expensive electricity is a policy choice, not an inevitable product of AI

If this can happen under Trump, imagine the possibilities under someone who actually gives a shit

I've decided I'll be writing about the Stochastic Parrot paper, focusing on the status of its technical and philosophical assertions when viewed in light of developments this year.
Taking suggestions for my next blog post topic.

- The Chinese room?
- Nagel's "What it's like" thought experiments?
- The hard problem more broadly?
- Emily Bender et al's Stochastic Parrot thesis?
- Buddhism's comprehensive theorizing of consciousness as nonreducible to physical form?
