rewriting a more realistic script for The Lord of the Rings. Frodo just stays home and we watch thirteen hours of him cooking meals and reading books. every hour or so he glances at a newspaper and goes, "Oh shit what's happening in Rohan? That's fucked." Then he goes to the pub to drink with Sam.

The Republican version of Reiner is Clint Eastwood; these Charlie Kirk comparisons are stupid. Kirk had zero broad cultural impact, he was an entirely reactionary political creature. Now imagine Obama saying "RIP BITCH" in an alternate reality where Clint gets brutally murdered by a family member

The older I get, the more my politics mature from childish, naïve beliefs like "the world is complicated and leaders have to make hard decisions" to more serious, adult principles like "hurting people is bad and helping people is good."

Two victims of previous school shootings — Mia Tretta, who was shot in the stomach in 2019 at Saugus High School, and Zoe Weissman, who survived the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — are now at Brown. Gun violence is out of control in this country.

I think there's a definite line between statements that strike me as "Yeah, that's fair to generalize about people in my category; I don't take offense; that doesn't apply to me specifically" vs statements clearly alleging that by belonging to the category at all I am obviously not worth a damn.

there were a couple weeks where i tried Perplexity to see if AI search engines were any good.

They aren't.

If you disagree let me make something clear: I am better at searching than you.
one of the coolest things about ChatGPT is how you can actually just never use it. you can fill your whole entire life with simply not once using it. it's incredible.

I miss when Twitter was truly great like the time a guy got upset at someone calling out a cricket team and started explaining how bowling worked and at the end OP was like "thanks for explaining btw I hold the world record for most career outs in cricket history"

The idea of being born after 9/11 jolts me to my core. You didn't know. You didn't know the world before it was remade. Everything is thrown into the forge and recast. You see the fire for one day. But you see the world being remade years after.

Commercial airplane travel introduced the concept that failure was intolerable. There were cruise ships, sure. But it is still tolerable in the Mediterranean.

A plane crashing is never tolerable. Ever. (Unless it's politically excusable) It demands absolute assurance. It demands it at scale.

Do you know how many parts a commercial passenger airplane is made of? You don't because you don't need to. It's like a zillion. And they all work to the tolerance of not killing you. Ever. They exist and they don't kill you and that's all that matters. Which is all a system should ever be.

When I was in 7th grade, my teacher did the whole, "draw a scientist" exercise, and I was the only one in my class who drew a woman. Not sure if it's a flex or not, but I think about that every time i see that study talked about again lol

It's a week out from Thanksgiving, and there are still people reeling from missing SNAP benefits, and food banks are overwhelmed by people who are newly unemployed on top of everything else as grocery prices skyrocket.

If you can, donate $$$ to your local area Food Bank. A little $ goes a long way.

When people talk about the excesses of MeToo, they have to lie, because the reality is that there was no massive social reckoning forcing people to believe survivors or hold perpetrators accountable. In fact, there has been a significant backsliding and new punishments in rejection of MeToo
