Day 38
Only Shallow | mbv

Remember your first listen of Loveless and how the first few seconds punched you in the face? Those four snare hits and the lurching aggression of guitar and bass are incredible, then Bilinda sleepily wafts in from a dream somewhere. Mad

Evan Dando at Rough Trade East tonight was lovely; scrappy, vulnerable, heartfelt and buoyant. However, amongst the Townes Van Zandt and Fred Neil covers I did not expect that he would give us a word-perfect rendition of.. this. youtu.be/Grg5tULy0tY?...

So I can’t be the first to notice the similarity in cadence between speeches given by Jonathan Reynolds and Dave Gorman’s found poetry. And then there’s the beard too. We deserve the truth!

I’ve a pretty strong personal connection to WH Smith. My mum worked there for a significant chunk of her career, focused on selling beautiful pens. And I worked there as a teenager / Saturday job and then later - part-time - to help fund my doctorate. I will miss the place, worn carpets and all.

#RecipeOfTheDay is the Coriander and Jalapeño Salsa (not dissimilar to an Indian chutney) that I usually make on a Friday for the weekend, but it occurred to me that if you had leftovers from the weekend that needed a little zhuzh, it would be just the thing! www.nigella.com/recipes/cori...
Coriander and Jalapeno Salsa
Known simply as Green Sauce, this is a constant in my house: I just wouldn't be allowed not to have it in the fridge at all times. It can be eaten either as a condiment — and once you get the taste fo...

Spent much of the day listening again to the Kinks’ 1970s output. With the odd dishonourable exception, a perfect set of albums. Better than the Beatles. There, said it.

📈Lots of charts doing rounds re market jitters in the UK.
Here's one I find quite helpful 👇
It's the cost of insuring UK debt against default.
Two things to note:
1. People ARE more concerned. The CDS spread HAS jumped up recently.
2. It's nothing like what happened in 2022.

I was really disappointed to miss this when it was shown only to discover that it’s on the Sky News YouTube channel.

2 mins in and it’s worth it alone for Jon Craig in a Santa suit.

Would you believe the Terry & June theme is great example of how to construct a bassline from root & 5th notes with some passing notes :)

I'm going to post a few of the best old albums that I heard for the first time this year. This 1979 LP from Veronique Chalot is a very special album. It has a serious medieval streak running through it, but the hypnotic drone coupled with its haunting vocals almost sound like The Velvet Underground.
