Weirdly the opposite because ideas don't really mean anything--it's much more about the execution and how I pull it off. I can write a modern version of Dracula and you can write a modern version of Dracula, but neither of us will write SALEM'S LOT, which was King's modern version of Dracula.
I would think that knowing if an idea is going to be a dog would be easier than knowing if it's going to be a bestseller.

I have *never* used ChatGPT. Not once.

I’m not saying I’m better than you… oh fuck it, I’m better than you.

"Bluesky is boring."

Social media *should* be boring. Being algorithm and dopamine poisoned is bad, actually.

When your feed dries up for the day, that's your cue to go do something else until new stuff shows up later.

It's two years since my debut novel, Dark Woods, Deep Water was published, and one year since my novella, Ghost Apparent came out.
When you're an indie author, you don't stop to celebrate, because you're always chasing new goals. But I think these books deserve to be celebrated.

Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head. 🖊️🦑

One of the best sff writers today and an exceptionally wonderful human Emma Newman is having... A Year. (pictured here making a face that makes us all go "same, girl, same"). If you can donate to make her fight against breast cancer a little easier, please do. Or you can buy some of her books!
Okay, deep breath.
I need your help. My friend set this up for me because financial stress is making the whole cancer stress a lot worse.

If, like me, you don't have money atm, if you have read and enjoyed any of my books, please can you tell people about them?

Tangentially, this is why sending a budding SFF author to study Wells or Heinlein or Tolkien isn't particularly helpful. They need to read what's being written now first and foremost, to find the best way to express their own ideas. Understanding how today's SFF builds on went before can come later.
Either way, you also have to be a good storyteller. You have to be 'readable'. So if it's an older character there IS such a thing as too authentic. You have to communicate to 2025 readers. Not 1949, 1969, or 1989 readers.

There is nothing relevant you could say about Omelas that hasn't been said already in the past 50+ years. I think SFF keeps coming back to it over and over because it's easier to play mental rescue drills for an imaginary child than confront the suffering of real children that fuels this society.

Finished "Coup de Grace" by Sofia Ajram for #transrightsreadathon! Enjoyed it overall (trapped in a weird place is one of my favourite plots) even though I had some issues with the ending.

Authors, repost this with the age you published your first novel. I’m trying to see something.

Seen a few folks astonished by my lack of support for ChatGPT and similar. Because AI, right?

Yeah, no. What we have right now is glorified autocorrect. Glorified autocorrect that takes the energy of an entire city to do what it does, plus half of Lake Erie to cool down while it's doing it.

For the writers upset that one short fiction editor can tell within the first few sentences if a story is a "no," I have even worse news for you:

This is nearly all short fiction editors.
Authors! Submitting your story to an open call? As someone reading through 400+ submissions for an anthology, some tips:

Opening paragraph/sentence: I can tell within the first few sentences if a story is a 'no.'

'Maybes' turn to 'no's' by the end of the first paragraph. Brutal, but it's true.

Skeet sized story time!

Write a story in a single post starting with "Midnight came. Everyone..."

Quote post, and don't forget to include the tag!
