I’m now in Austin TX due to FL’s anti-trans policies. I had to abandon a huge plant collection 15+ years in making and a position at a large botanical garden in north FL. I’m still looking for decent work and a kind soul with a greenhouse I could use for my rarest plant 🌱
gorgeous total eclipse eyes <3
If you've never had a good look at the eyelashes on a greater roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus), check out the second picture. This one practically ran me over but stopped long enough to glare. Photo taken at Tingley Beach, Albuquerque on December 18, 2025.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

He's also responsible for raising all the money that paid for bringing Hollingsworth v. Perry & even more importantly Bostic v. Schaefer, which created the circuit split that forced SCOTUS to take on Obergefell v. Hodges. The role he played in American marriage equality cannot be overstated.
The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing.

All from his movies.

A positive note: The 1980s Coastal Barrier Resources Act made “3.8 million acres of barrier islands ineligible for federal flood insurance, discouraging development. Studies since show that has saved taxpayers close to a billion dollars a year.”

🌱 wildlife pro tip of the day: when trimming back dead or weak hollow stems of plants leave a few sideways ones a several inches off ground as they’re really good habitat for some chill native bees (eg halictids). Some of the bigger Salvias, Firespike, and blackberry are quite good for this

Keep being pretty damn impressed by fall color in Austin TX despite being in that 8b/9a transition zone.
native Ulmus crassifolia (“Cedar” elm) and Quercus buckleyi trees (Texas red oak)in particular are stunning

At the end of each year, FDA releases data on antibiotics sold for use in livestock.

It usually changes a few %. This year, it went up 15.8%.

I was shocked & emailed experts/industry groups. Likeliest explanation per a source: industry is not "being good stewards of antibiotics"

I jokingly referred to my boobs as chesticles once when I was a 14-year-old trans masc and if i said that around the authors of this list they'd add it
Really says a lot about how extremely online they are that they put "chestfeed" on this list.

Is there no pushback from health insurers about the end of subsidy? Are they not losing revenue because people will not be buying plans anymore? I'm just flabbergasted there's not yet an extension of ACA. It is politically extremely stupid in a way that I think will actually cost the GOP

The bartender at our local brewery said her monthly premium is going from $450 to $1250. Per month. This is more than the increase those of us with employer insurance see when we grumble about premium increases and I need such folks to understand. It is literally unaffordable.
People are going to die because of the pending insurance premium hikes. I know the terrain of discourse is inconsistent and goes through a tumble cycle every 24 hours, but I really think we need to hone in on this reality and drive it home for people.

Think of your favorite celebrity, whether they’re an actor, musician, athlete, whatever.

They’re probably pretty well-off, financially. But they are still closer to auctioning off their possessions to cover medical bills than they are to being a billionaire.

One of the highlights of a short trip to Yunnan last week – the Spot-breasted Parrotbill: an icon for functional morphologists, an insectivore with the 'wrong' beak (stubby like a seed-eater) which nonetheless makes ecophysical sense because it uses bite-force to snip through grass/bamboo stems
