It always feels weird when you're reading a setting book where it's based off of analogues for real-world countries, since those are easily grasped by most readers, but also has very long descriptions because they don't want to break the kayfabe and say, "LOOK IT'S ANCIENT GREECE, OKAY?"

D&D has had a clear chance to become a first mover on this genre since 1983 and kept passing it up.
What Isekai TTRPGs are there? I'm trying to work out why this isn't a more popular genre.
So far we've worked out:
- DIE: the RPG, I suppose
- That one class from BREAK!!
- The Dungeoncrawler Carl TTRPG, I think, but it's not out yet

I see this kind of thing a fair amount when going through OSR games (especially with traps / puzzles) and I think of it as "escape room design", where the character suddenly is synonymous with the player. It's not like role-playing a character, it's more like theatre-of-the-mind escape room design.

Reminded of folks being livid over D&D 3e, even though AD&D 2e had over a thousand products; easily the most well-supported game in the industry.
Enjoy what you got, nobody can make a TTRPG "defunct" for you. But there's also countless other experiences to enjoy. Don't let a brand push you around.

"What is OSR?" Just a shared brand or a vibe, as far as I'm concerned.
If you start putting in a bunch of requirements like what rules are included or compatibility is necessary it's just creatively stifling. I don't really have a dog in the race, but I feel it's just a label you embrace or don't.

Hey, got my own copy, and now that this is out, it's worth bringing up the Page XX articles I did for 13th Age 1e, which are still just as useful with 2e!

Consider replacing "World's Greatest Roleplaying Game" with "World's Most Famous Roleplaying Game". Or, if you're feeling sassy, "World's Most Profitable Roleplaying Game".
