Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Mozilla has a new CEO and he just announced that Firefox will evolve into a modern AI browser. Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

An incredible thread of people losing their minds at the idea of enforcing speed limits 🧵
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

AI firms' naked desire to eliminate knowledge workers' subsistence has forced their main market into a lose-lose situation.

Either AI doesn't work, and your job sucks more, or AI does work, and you lose your job.

That's a tough sell to the knowledge workers you're trying to sell to.

And anyway, Battle Royale (a novel then a manga and a film), is just Lord of the Flies with extra steps: the wrestling competition format of the same name, and a Stephen King book, among other things... A "battle royal", as Anne points out with many fine examples below, is its own genre.
JFC wish people would stop saying THE HUNGER GAMES ripped off BATTLE ROYALE. (Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian, parroting Quentin Tarantino, being the latest offender.) Might as well say it ripped off THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME; DEATH RACE 2000; ROLLERBALL; THE RUNNING MAN; THE 10th VICTIM tbc

And the everyday experiential world ushered in by that development - never really knowing if any given cultural artefact was actually written/designed/composed/produced by a human, even if a human claims it was - will be endlessly disorientating, demoralising, and fundamentally horrible to navigate.
