Also a pretty fair guess that someone who talks about "the West" and any threats to it is a big racist.

And here we go. I never wrote this article, and yet it is cited here.

And of course, it sounds so plausible, I seriously checked whether I had forgotten it, or the footnote was slightly wrong.

BUT! (seriously!!) the left cannot merely copy the right's formula. We all respond to narrative, emotion, community & status. The left doesn't respond to the exact same emotional appeals. The community is different in important ways, but the need for community is the same. Status is different too.

Texas once feared a phantom federal occupation. Now Gov. Abbott’s troops are helping carry it out under Trump. And Houston may be next, writes the Houston Chronicle editorial board. bit.ly/48Q3D5C

If and when America finds a way out of authoritarianism, not only will ICE have to be abolished: All these people will need to be held accountable in a court of law for the monstrosities they are committing - those who are ordering them as well as those who are carrying them out.

Every single one.

📌We are being besieged by toxic masculinity in this country. Emotionally illiterate, weak, immature men are lashing out, because it's easier than calling themselves into account.
It's been going on forever, is dangerous, and really, really fucking tiresome.

Things to consider:

Document the violence & violations--on camera, w/photos, saving images--any way you can. Speaking as a historian- it will matter

Point out violations--w/images & text--even if you think it won't matter. It will. It needs to be called out & exposed

You are a witness.
Expose it.

Everything by Trump and Miller right now is weakness.

They know they've lost the majority and their policies are unpopular and they've F'd up the economy.

So, they'll use the military and threats and unleash their Reeks.

But, they don't have the numbers.

All hands on deck resistance.

I’m gen X. Did not vote for Trump in 2016, 2020, or 2024. I get the FAFO reactions, but it isn’t necessarily all that accurate.

Kavanaugh Collateral

ICE admits that up to 50% of arrests in its Chicago raids are "collateral.” These aren't statistics. They are parents taken from their children, neighbors taken from our communities. When does a "collateral" U.S. citizen child's trauma matter? This isn't law enforcement; it's a campaign of terror.

Retired folks pre Medicare age are gonna be priced out of the market. How many aging members of the workforce would retire earlier if not for the cost of healthcare? I hate the idea of being tethered to a job simply for the health insurance benefits.

📣 NEW: In which I finally put that absurd 2013 WSJ graphic to good use.

2026 #ACA Window Shopping is LIVE in Georgia, Idaho, Nevada, New York and Virginia.

Here's how much premiums will ACTUALLY spike for 4 households starting January 1st if they don't shop around.

In which I finally put that absurd 2013 WSJ graphic to good use
Twelve years ago, the Wall St. Journal ran a story about the impact of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, which was a sweeping tax bill signed into law by President Obama which locked in the Bush tax cuts for lower & middle-class households while allowing them to expire on schedule for wealthier Americans: A compromise measure, the Act gives permanence to the lower rate of much of the Bush tax cuts, while retaining the higher tax rate at upper income levels that became effective on January 1 due to the expiration of the Bush tax cuts. It also establishes caps on tax deductions and credits for those at upper income levels. It does not tackle federal spending levels to a great extent, rather leaving that for further negotiations and legislation. The American Taxpayer Relief Act passed by a wide majority in the Senate, with both Democrats and Republicans supporting it, while most of the House Republicans opposed it. The WSJ story, titled "How Much Will Your Taxes Jump?," led to widespread derision at the time for wringing its hands over wealthy people having to go back to (gasp) paying a few percent more of their sky-high incomes in taxes.

Video of officers abusing their power and hurting people can really matter. Video is a big part of why the police killing of George Floyd was the BLM case that provoked the biggest public reaction.
When people see violent abuse, they’re forced to confront it more. Not seeing makes it easier to deny.

The regime is acting this way because there are no consequences so it is clear that consequences—the development of them, the advocacy for them, the imposition on bad behavior—are the answer to our crisis.

also, in keeping with Vance’s view of american identity, only white people are fully American with the right to critique or dissent. nonwhites must show proper gratitude (supporting Trump or marrying JD Vance) before they can speak critically of the country (in approved ways, of course)

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude

There are any number of legitimate reasons to use the passive voice, including not knowing who did the action you’re describing, or the whom is more interesting/germane than the who.

Exonerating the Gestapo is not one of those legitimate reasons.

If there is no violence, they will create violence.

They will traumatize our children, our grandparents, they will traumatize everyone in order to create a fascist spectacle.

This explains a lot. For a moment, I wondered why they'd do something as ridiculous as drop agents on the roof of the apartment building from helicopters, but of course, they did it for this footage. The same reason they were marching in formation downtown and snatched a family in Millennium Park.

GOP lies are coming fast now. They didn't have a clean funding bill; they refused to keep government open unless $90 million in our cash was released for *their* security details. Dems said no, we're not putting ourselves first, we're putting the working class's healthcare—which Trump trashed—first.
