It's a way simpler way to verify journalists than DNS or centralised registries — for example, this is my Fediverse account, I linked to it from my @financialtimes.com author page so it shows up as a green "verified" link due to rel="me"

This is a good dissection of the scam! I'll also note a few telltales of the account itself (bsky.app/profile/paul...) that shows you it's a scammer:
1. The icon, banner image, and image in the first post are all the same.
2. The only top level posts are image posts, and they all have the same pose.
