This projected increase of people living in extreme poverty is very worrisome. The largest part is projected for sub-Saharan Africa, where there is also the highest number of people without access to electricity. Photovoltaics could help to turn this trajectory around.
In the last decades, the world has made fantastic progress against extreme poverty. In 1990, 2.3 billion people lived in extreme poverty. Since then, the number of extremely poor people has declined by 1.5 *billion* people. 🧵

IEA did it again. Cheap modules and cheap batteries are available worldwide, a significant number of African countries see a steep increase in PV installations, but IEA presents stalling installation levels for the future. www.pv-magazine.com/2025/11/12/i...

If true, this would be quite an achievement. Does anyone knows any more detail about which technology is used? As the thickness is specified to be in the micrometer range I guess not perovskites but maybe something based on III-V semiconductors ??

The Japanese government wants 20 GW of perovskite PV by 2040. I am unsure, whether I find this ambitious or not. For something not really commercial right now, it is a lot. But when successful, 20 GW are quickly produced and 2040 is far. www.pv-magazine.com/2025/09/22/j...
