This is not the United States I wanted to live in. It's not the United States I wanted my kids to become adults and live out their lives in. But it's the United States we've got right now, and we need to keep alive the hope we can make it the one we do want, and work to achieve that.

The lesson for universities is you may as well fight back. You'll lose the money either way. The only question is whether you keep your dignity.
Exclusive: Weeks after President Donald Trump’s administration ordered NIH to pull $250 million in biomedical research grants to Columbia University, the agency is freezing all remaining grant money owed to the university until further notice. scim.ag/4if5Rg1

Proposed Florida rule bans public univ activities "intended to achieve a desired result related to social issues," defined as "topics that polarize or divide society among political, ideological, moral, or religious beliefs, positions, or norms." USF lawyer: "I can’t think of anything that doesn't."
Florida rule would limit talk of ‘social issues’ at public universities
Critics say a proposed regulation is too broad and could inhibit free speech.

Apparently I've upset the Sparta-bros on the Other Platform again, and it occurs to me that I haven't done that here yet.

So...Lycurgus isn't a real historical figure, Sparta wasn't that militarily capable, and internally, it was a horrific society.

Collections: This. Isn’t. Sparta. Part I: Spartan School
This is Part I of a seven part series (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, Gloss., Retrospective) comparing the popular legacy of Sparta (embodied in films like 300) with the historical ancient state. Toda…

I really miss the blog era
This is good. I would make the case for blogs. There was a lot to like about the classic blog: more room to explain things than on microblogging platforms (like this or Twitter). Also, the ‘blogosphere’ facilitated conversation with ‘pingback’ technology.

While we argue about whether senators should always wear suits, "the former president of the United States—and a leading candidate to be the next president—insinuated that America’s top general deserves to be put to death."
“The man who incited a violent attack on the Capitol to overturn an election is openly fomenting violence while explicitly endorsing authoritarian strategies should he return to power. That is the story of the election. Everything else is window dressing.” My latest in The Atlantic:
Trump Suggests That America’s Top General Deserves Execution
The former president is inciting violence against the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. America’s response is distracted and numb.

US COVID SHOTS ARE FREE.

Please do not let Walgreens and CVS mislead you or your family members or neighbors about this! They are the biggest part of the federal bridge (free shots for uninsured people) program, but the rollout’s logistics have been a little scattered and you may get pushback.
PSA: the CDC has a program that pays for your COVID vaccine if your insurer won't. The guy at CVS told me that my insurer had not added the new vaccine to its formulary yet, so I'd need to pay $190. I told him about this program, showed him the website, and paid nothing. 🤗

What's clearly evident in the replies to this post: every NIMBY claims to support building new housing in principal but has an excuse for why they oppose it in practice.
The only solution to this is construction at scale: market rate, subsidized and public. And here’s the thing, if you can jump start this process you can create a virtuous cycle in which the growing supply of home builders becomes a labor supply for public housing authorities as well.
right. every single pathology is a function of the fact that the supply of housing has been stagnant for 30 years and the demand for housing keeps going up. that’s the whole thing!

There’s no way I’d go through a transporter. You 100% die and they make an exact copy of you out of your corpse. You can argue they’re functionally the same person and you’d be right but I don’t believe the consciousness transfers. The you that enters never wakes up… *security escorts me out*
