And you can argue forever about whether or not Black Americans should identify with those things, but the reality is that many of us are 9th or 10th gen on this land. We're not Indigenous but we're really culturally and socially from here and nowhere else. We can leave but this is home.

American pop culture is Black culture. From music to slang to food Black Americans built the framework and had their creations co-opted & commercialized. And that's not to erase anyone else's contributions but not a single popular genre in American music could exist with Black creators

A month ago I made a list of all the life skills I’ve had to teach myself: cooking, hygiene and grooming, financial literacy, long-term planning, gift-giving, etc. I was struck by how many of those things I was ashamed for not knowing how to do because I didn’t realize they were things you learned.
