Researches and professes about international relations. “An incredibly average scholar.” Co-director of the Correlates of War project. Probably thinking about music, food, or the dog.

If you aren't failing you aren't trying. Grad students and new faculty: the most prolific scholars are also the most prolific at getting rejected. Rejections suck but they are a big part of the publication process.

Here are my published articles in each year and the number of times each was rejected before publication

From Jan–July 2025, U.S. musical instrument exports are 8.4% below the 2021–24 avg.

Brazil (-28%), China (-27%), Italy (-23%), and Canada (-12%) saw sharpest Y-o-Y drops.

Why?
NOT retaliation (ex-China)

- Higher input costs
- Global economic uncertainty
- Consumer substitution away from brands

NEW: From Jan-Jul 2025 US exports of musical instruments were 8.4% lower than average over same time 2021–24, likely reflecting higher input costs passed to consumers, dampened demand amid economic uncertainty, & for some, conscious substitution away from US products. By @cullenhendrix.bsky.social:
Tariffs and economic uncertainty are hitting US musical instrument exports

🧵 Authoritarianism, Democratization, and Coalition Politics.

The consensus around here is, more or less, that the United States is currently a consolidating authoritarian regime controlled by a mix of reactionary populists and fascists.

"It's like a PhD in every field!"

"Can it reliably do college-level work, such as accurately identifying and summarizing pertinent information?"

"No."

"So what is really does is sound like an expert to people who aren't experts in that field?"

"Yeah! That's what everyone wants, right?"

Notable that AI tools could not even generate accurate meeting summaries beyond “a couple hundred words.” That’s useless for minutes.

And for lit review they *completely* shit the bed.

But these aren’t people’s favorite tasks & AI is way quicker, so many will keep using them, truth be damned.
I Tested How Well AI Tools Work for Journalism
Some tools were sufficient for summarizing meetings. For research, the results were a disaster.

To elaborate a bit on why inviting Putin to Alaska for talks on ending the war without Zelensky (or European allies) represents, among many other things, the death of US diplomacy 🧵1/
profsaunders.bsky.social
No, he’s not giving Putin Alaska, but he is giving Putin a huge gift: the legitimacy of touching down on US soil at the invitation of a US president. A reward for the full-scale invasion of a sovereign, democratic country that the United States and its European allies support.
