Since this post got some interest, I wanted to point out that I found a blog that discusses why heating oil is used so much in the northeast USA. Apparently it is a consequence of price controls and restrictions on natural gas usage in the 1970s-80s: energyathaas.wordpress.com/2021/11/01/t...
Heating fuels in the USA. Bizarrely, liberal states in the NE USA prefer the most polluting choice, fuel oil, which also emits the most carbon dioxide.
