But here's the real cherry on top re: discovering a published paper that I can only assume was written by an LLM, full of fabricated citations.
When I was searching in various places to confirm that those citations were fabricated, Google's AI overview just kept the con going.

If the figures in this article are anything like accurate, #scam centres may now be the largest industry in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar... to have got this large without the significant involvement of senior government officials, army, police etc. is inconceivable.

This was a very interesting conversation and now I really want to know more about the bespoke MLATs!
I spoke to Michael Bobbitt, a former FBI official about how the FBI secretly ran an encrypted phone for criminals, backdoored it, and collected tens of millions of messages. Bobbitt was helping funnel intelligence from US to European authorities
