The end of the week in academic selfies: TGIF!

I am just an academic International lawyer, standing in front of every other discipline, begging them not to use the word “sovereignty“ without defining it.

No meetings, mostly a (too rare) writing day. So I rocked up to the office in an eighth Doctor adjacent outfit. (It’s got to the point where I can now come into work in a home-made green velvet frock coat and my colleagues don’t even comment.)

Aha, so I’m either not a person or not - for sartorial purposes - present in Australia. Take your pick. 😉

Academic selfie at 50

… maybe.

Is there any occasion when a man over 35 in full possession of his senses should wear a polo shirt?

Have the courage to commit to a T-shirt or short sleeve shirt, none of these half measures!

The week so far in academic selfies

I have painstakingly and literally unpicked my mistake. Happily, in fixing my original mistake I’ve now made a much worse mistake. Good thing I’m working with velvet, which really loves being reworked and can take a lot of punishment. (It cannot.) #sewing

I am chagrined to report that, once again, the process of learning from my mistakes – involves making mistakes. #sewing

Frank’s Beach, solitude. End of a lovely day.

That is, it might look "piratical" but it's actually both worse and different, and thus is a question of state responsibility or aggression - precisely because it was done by a government vessel acting on orders.

Why do people find this so hard?

@pagingdrpaige.bsky.social a quote on warships can't be pirates:

G Fitzmaurice: ‘Acts of a piratical character committed by warships on superior orders were *more than acts of piracy*, and might constitute aggression or an act of war engaging the responsibility of the flag State’ [1955] I YBILC 56.

Writing retreat: view at the end of Day 2, and an echidna!

I am writing once again on the codification of the law of piracy, and discovering - once again - why everyone who writes on the subject winds up sounding either tetchy or a bit crazed.

@pagingdrpaige.bsky.social discuss why the subject provokes strong reactions here:
