Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

This is the first thing I've read that made me feel not crazy. It feels like the average person and even the media is whistling past the graveyard, too stuck on American exceptionalism with "it could never happen here" while the Trump regime does whatever it wants with little to no actual pushback.
It has been two months.

I wrote this on the weekend, about that space between (no longer) democracy and full-scale autocracy where America now exists, reflecting on why the Trumpists have been able to so swiftly overwhelm most of the country’s (evidently weak) democratic defenses:
What Authoritarianism Means
Even critical observers underestimated the speed and scope of the Trumpist assault, they overestimated democratic resilience. What is America now, and what comes next?

Why did you vote to confirm this man @amyklobuchar.com and @smith.senate.gov?

This is similar to the rallying cry "Je suis Charlie.” Either you support free speech or you don’t. Either you support due process or you don’t. We are all in this together, regardless of our opinions or the content of our speech.

We may devolve into fascism, but goddamnit, these Democrats are going to make sure we do it with decorum!
I’m not down with this!

These Democrats voted with Republicans to censure Al Green:

- Ami Bera (CA)
- Ed Case (HI)
- Jim Costa (CA)
- Laura Gillen (NY)
- Jim Himes (CT)
- Chrissy Houlahan (PA)
- Marcy Kaptur (OH)
- Jared Moskowitz (FL)
- Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA)
- Tom Suozzi (NY)

This is the second time @linkedin.com has sent me this exact same push notification in the last week. Good to know they are spamming me this bullshit to try to get in the Trump admin’s good graces. Time to disable push notifications for their app.

Mr. Trump is considering a bold, but controversial new plan to cancel the US Constitution
Will the New York Times call it “unusual” or “unconventional” when Trump says he’s looking very strongly at canceling the constitution?

It's great to see any Democratic politicians who understand the moment we're in and are able to speak to it!

Democracy requires your courage.

Governor Murphy thanks King Trump for bulldozing the rule of law to unilaterally undo a law passed in the state of New York. Add him to the list of people who is happy to have a king as long as that king mandates policies he agrees with.
I want to thank President Trump and Secretary Duffy for their efforts to halt the current congestion pricing program.

While I have consistently expressed openness to a form of congestion pricing, the current program lines the MTA’s pockets at the expense of New Jerseyans.

The Washpost, which is bleeding millions of dollars and shrinking its staff, accepted -- and then rejected -- a $115,000 ad that criticized Elon Musk.

Anyway, here's the ad that the Post's business side didn't want its readers to see ⤵️

Isn't this the most predictable Democratic response?
The geniuses at the Democratic Party settling on “maybe we were too woke” rather than “a cabal of billionaire pedophile Nazis are stealing your money and taking a sledgehammer to your future” is astonishing. Just one of those things

I would love @karaswisher.bsky.social to bring him back for a follow-up interview on On to ask him about this.
Cancel all doubt. Walter Isaacson is pure Musk apologist. On Morning Joe, he said to @jheil.bsky.social:
"Obviously he did not intend it to be a Nazi salute any more than I don't think, say, Donald Trump intended not to put his hand on the Bible....I'm sure he didn't intend it to be a Nazi salute."
