A downside of social media broadly is it tends to platform 1. people who performatively pretend to know everything 2. people who pretend not to know things for monetization purposes (All of those "Americans tell me this about your culture" videos on tiktok are because American eyeballs make more $$)

Speaking of the ShamWow guy - in 1938 Kansan radio pitchman Wilbert Lee O'Daniel won the Texas governorship, and also defeated Lyndon Johnson when he took his first run at US Senate in 1941. When people challenged him on being from out of state, he basically responded "what's more Texan than that?"
