It's that wonderful time of the procrastinator's year where, surrounded by "LAST MINUTE DEAL" banners, he returns to buy his Christmas gifts, only to discover that nothing he'd placed in his cart weeks ago will be delivered before Christmas. :-P

@mecid.bsky.social HI Majid. Thank you for your writings. As a new-ish iOS developer, I've learned a tremendous amount.

I recently read your article about how you set up feature flags. You mention some build configurations and schemes you also use. Have you ever explained those in more detail?
Feature flags in Swift
Almost every project I work on has at least three build configurations: Debug, TestFlight, and App Store. These configurations differ not only in build settings but also in functionality. This week, w...

Virtual reality politics
My book in progress shows inflation was disconnected from consumer sentiment under Biden to a ridiculous degree. Republicans drove down sentiment, the media did too, independents too. Had consumer sentiment reflected the actual economy to usual extent, Harris wins by 4 points.

This is obviously atrocious as well as disgusting. But I genuinely worry about how a generation of younger Americans is growing up thinking this is the way Presidents (and more generally, politicians) have always behaved. Trump has done so much to debase and degrade the civility of our country.

Hey, remember when the DoD was renamed in 1947 by a bunch of woke soy boys who killed so many Nazis that Germany surrendered and Hitler shot himself in the head?
The top of the New York Times story totally swallows the “woke military“ bullshit that Trump has been selling. How embarrassing.

Exactly. Read this whole thread.
Why am I spending so much time dissecting this silly & ultimately meaningless episode?

Because, friends, hear me: this is the template for the last 10 years of US politics. This is the US politics in a nutshell. This is how it *all* works.

With this vote, Congress makes ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in history, with more money per year at its disposal over the next four years than the budgets of the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, and Bureau of Prisons combined.

Re Zohran’s grocery store plans- the government already runs discount grocery stores ALL OVER THE WORLD.

They are called commissaries and they are on every US military base.

This is why "you're right, it isn't what you voted for, because your values aren't shared by the Republican Party" is a much more effective message to help build a better America than "yes you did vote for this, you bad person" which fails to take advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity
I think, done properly, they merge into one.

She may not have explicitly wanted this to happen, & not thought it was what she was voting for, but she did, in fact, vote for it.

That's the gap that needs fixing: between what she *thought* she was voting for & what she *actually* was voting for.

the single best thing democrats could do to win back trust with voters — and a good number of those voters who have a low opinion of the democratic party are democrats themselves! — is adopt an aggressively partisan orientation toward republicans and loudly perform their opposition

It's 2015. President Barack Obama has accepted a "sky palace" jumbo jet from the Qatari government, which he'll own after he leaves office. "Everybody relax," he says in an interview with the New York Times. Everyone does. The networks then televise the military parade in his honor on his birthday.

oh yes the same people who acted like they were being murdered when they had to put a piece of cloth over their faces definitely understand the concept of shared sacrifice
Rep. David Joyce on Trump saying girls should have fewer dolls: "The idea that the Christmas trade is already starting to slow down and there might be less around, I get it. I think the American people will understand that because the American people understand shared sacrifice."

An vital point by Judge Wilkinson: the Constitution is not just a legal document. It's a political compact, ordained by the people, delegating certain powers to the government for certain purposes. Its processes and restrictions are our rules for our government. Trump is breaking our rules for him.
INCREDIBLE opinion by Wilkinson refusing to stay Judge Xinis's orders in the Abrego Garcia case, condemning DOJ's arguments as "shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear."

If Democrats learned anything from public reaction to Trump's response to COVID, it should have been that without a strong counterbalancing narrative, Trump and the right-wing propaganda machine will eventually settle on a narrative that convinces millions of people that Trump isn't to blame. (1/2)

With Yoon removed from office today, by my count that makes 34 democratic leaders convicted since 2010. Only one—Trump—faced no real consequences. Trump's actions weren't uncommon. What was exceptional was how our institutions failed to hold him accountable.

This is like a coffee shop naming itself "World's Best Coffee Shop". The press repeats this name uncritically and, like Buddy from Elf, a lot of people who read it aren't in on the joke.
Stop. Calling. Them. Reciprocal. Tariffs.
US drinkers will pay more for cocktails, champagne and foreign beers, brands will disappear from bar menus and jobs will be lost on both sides of the Atlantic as a result of President Trump's reciprocal tariffs, drinks industry bodies and analysts said reut.rs/42gPLg2
