Family owns a wonderful independent bookstore, so my Christmas Eve Day tradition is getting last minute recommendations and ordering from what is remaining as they close for holidays.
READ THIS: Still probably the best #ChristmasEve tradition I’ve heard. Iceland definitely does Christmas well — my Reykjavik clients had funny comments about this! Are you planning to curl up with a great new book on cities this #Christmas? Share your pick with us using hashtag #UrbanismBookClub!

If you're not trans, I don't think I can fully explain how important this is.

It's so powerful that one of the most circulated science media publications in the world has come out and said "trans children are real and providing transition care improves their lives." That's groundbreaking.
The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

On a cold business trip to Winnipeg, 15 years ago, I was excited to be staying just a few blocks away from Canada's most famous intersection, and then bewildered to find that it was bizarrely inaccessible.
IMPORTANT: “Doomsday predictions proven ‘wrong.’ Data shows opening Portage and Main to pedestrians has minimal impact on rush-hour travel times.”

BECAUSE OF COURSE THEY WERE WRONG.

For DECADES, those of us who understand how this stuff works fought to fix Canada’s WORST intersection for people.
Data shows opening Portage and Main to Winnipeg pedestrians has minimal impact on rush-hour travel times
Four months after the intersection of Portage and Main opened to pedestrian crossings, traffic data shows there has been almost no impact to commuting motorists. It’s news that comes as little surpris...

One of the fascinating things about AI prose is how many of these common traits and tells apply to multiple models.
A look at various quirks in AI-generated prose, mainly influenced by "overfitting" in AI models, as humans increasingly mimic AI language in writing and speech (Sam Kriss/New York Times)

Young children sometimes blame their actions on imaginary friends or pretend characters. But we own responsibility for what we put into the world, whether or not we do everything ourselves or rely on others (including machines).
I agree! I also find it utterly frustrating when fans (& foe!) of AI talk about how "it's evolving so quickly" as though someone pressed a button once & it's been doing its own thing ever since.

AI is not sentient or even intelligent. Human beings are pushing the technology to do more, more, more.
I don't understand why AI is considered "different". AI-generated content should be held accountable to all existing laws. The AI companies should be held accountable, too.
