Happy belated 40th incidentally to Half Man Half Biscuit’s Back in the DHSS, and who could have imagined then how much better they were going to get.

When I was writing the new book - because tbh, the 80s was a hard decade for me at times - I kept coming back to the inescapable truth that what kept me going was: books, TV, comedy, radio, films sometimes, but above all music. That stuff's not frippery, it's how you become the person you are.

May start using this still of Ed Davy when I'm next coaching passing skills. Excellent base pass; drive up through the hips, bent knee, arms following through towards the target...

#OTD 45 years ago (7 Oct 1980) according to my diary, I drew these images for the Hitchhiker's Guide BBC TV series. Douglas Adams as both the ad exec and as Paula, the worst poet in the universe. I was 19 years old and having fun.

A reminder to Mel Stride that it was the late #CleoSylvestre who in 1971 coined the joke, "I'd be delighted if Enoch Powell gave me £2,000 to go back where I came from. I could get a smashing place in Hitchin for that."

Had I known we’d be doing Paradise Lost on Only Connect, I wouldn’t have read it earlier in the year.

In which genius Leo McKinstry doesn’t seem to realise the value of marketing things to wider groups of people.

Yes, the Daily Mail really did publish a whole article today complaining about black people appearing in adverts...

Today's Daily Mail advertisers include Lloyds Bank, Lidl, Imagine Cruising and ROL Cruises
Screenshot of a Daily Mail article with the headline "Why are so many adverts now more interested in diversity than in the reality of British life?". At the top of the article are two images of black people featuring in advertisements.

I'd make a case for Alexandr and Sergei based on the longevity of the ad campaign.
