The entire piece is excellent, and strikes the tone that is so crucial for this moment. But I'm most intrigued by Meredith's question near the middle: "Who is served by pretending we live in an America different from this one?"

Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

Wild how quickly @danhinkel.bsky.social's article became relevant again.

Those 34 years would have been 26 years if the Cook County Conviction Integrity Unit had cleared Francisco Benitez instead of denying him in 2015. He's one of at least 21 people the group rejected who were later exonerated. You can read about it in my @injusticewatch.org series Denying Innocence.

Ah, God. It's October 7.

Two horrible fucking years.

I don't know what to say that @sirosenbaum.bsky.social and I didn't already say just ten days after it all began:

The hate crime charge against Alexa Wilkinson for photographing vandalism of the New York Times building is a dangerous precedent, no matter what you think of Wilkinson.

BREAKING: Our client Mario Guevara, an Emmy-winning journalist detained by ICE in retaliation for livestreaming law enforcement activity, will be deported tomorrow to El Salvador.

Mario and his family are being punished for his reporting. This cruelty is meant to stifle our free press.

Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

Much of this story covers Cook Co. prosecutors' unwillingness to systematically examine the many similar coercion allegations against Det. Brian Forberg & partners.

Of the 24 known people charged or convicted in cases involving a coercion allegation against Forberg et al, every single one is Black

I’m still not over this. I know there’s a lot going on, but I think it should be a bigger deal that the country’s most popular podcaster just casually throws out antisemitic conspiracy theories as if they’re common knowledge. And the paper of record just quoted him doing it uncritically.

Love waking up on the second day of Rosh Hashanah to see that casual antisemitism is so normalized that the NYT quotes Joe Rogan dropping a well-worn antisemitic trope without any acknowledgement of it at all.
A quote from Joe Rogan in the NYT: “You don’t think that the [expletive] globalist lizard people who run the world are sitting here going: ‘Great, what do we got — three years? We’ll wait this out. We’ll wait this out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, let them say the government should be involved in censoring people’s speech.’”

Also, Kimmel gets cancelled, but this asshole spews antisemitic bullshit to his audience of millions and the NYT finds his perspective important enough to devote a story to it?

Today marks 100 days of journalist Mario Guevara’s detention by U.S. law enforcement for livestreaming. Guevara, the only journalist behind bars for his journalism, faces the very real threat of deportation for doing his job.

We demand Mario’s immediate release. freedomformario.com

This may seem wild but it was in fact inevitable. Conspiratorial people animated by grievance and grift invariably land on one of the oldest and most lucrative conspiratorial grifts of all. You can set your clock by it.

Now that’s what I call a pivot
Tweet from Shaun king that reads: “Fascinating to see Jews, who do not believe in the Christian Bible, and generally do not read or study it, critique how a Christian tells a story from it at the funeral of a Christian.

I was a Christian pastor for 14 years.

The story Tucker Carlson told was Biblical. Period.”
