Not much to add to all of the lovely tributes that have been coming in, but just to note for those that didn’t know him - he really was a great scientist, character and visionary.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of our founder, colleague, mentor and friend, Professor Sir John Gurdon. His vision and dedication will continue to inspire generations of scientists.

The Dunn School is a really great environment for taking up a Career Development Fellowship, and we are looking for candidates! Please spread the word.

Agreed.

Success in academia often has more to do with luck, patronage and the job market than “hard work”.
Good academics acknowledge this.
I worked hard, but I was in the right place at the right time on occasion. Historians far more talented than I have fallen between the cracks.
Illustration showing a graduation ceremony, with speaker addressing graduates: “Let the example of my fluke success guide nearly all of you to crushing disappointment”.

Looking forward to todays Symposium in honour of our dear friend and colleague Béla Novák (1956-2025). A fantastic cast lined up to celebrate his life and his many accomplishments.

Congratulations Richard! Have to admit I’ve never heard of this list, but great for publishing that you are on it! Cover of Time next?

Delighted to be included in Time magazine's #TIME100HEALTH list - a real illustration of the impact of preprints in biomedical science.

🎉 We're very excited that our Chief Science and Strategic Officer, @richardsever.bsky.social, is included on this year's #TIME100HEALTH list!

This recognition helps demonstrate the impact preprints in #bioRxiv & #medRxiv have on global health.

Sadaf was spectacular as usual, but Michel Milinkovitch’s talk on colour patterning in reptiles was the best for me in hearing about fascinating biology that I hadn’t thought about before. He did talk for too long though (although I hardly noticed as I was enjoying so much).
steveroyle.bsky.social
I've enjoyed being at a broad conference #biologists100 and seeing talks that I wouldn't normally see. Fascinating (and entertaining) plenary talk yesterday from Sadaf Farooqi on obesity. If you're here at the meeting, what out-of-the-ordinary talk or poster did you enjoy the most?
jordanraff.bsky.social
This is barely believable.

Goodness. The joy keeps coming

Hold on to your pipettors folks, it's gonna be a bumpy few months. #nih #fundinghell

For those who haven’t seen this yet. So brave. And I think they even look just slightly ashamed?

Wow. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde fearlessly calls out Trump and Vance to their faces. This is heroic.

Most inefficient Christmas dessert dish? Happy Holidays to all!
jordanraff.bsky.social
Who could have predicted this?! This will be quite a party and (more importantly?) a great way for early career scientists to hear about other fields and to build their networks. Hope to see you there.

And organising the free beer for the party afterwards was even more impressive! Great job.

Thank you Susana, Jadranka, Kevin and Jennifer for organizing these amazing sessions @ascbiology.bsky.social - so much exciting centrosome biology!!
susanagodinho.bsky.social
We would like to thank all the speakers for their amazing and inspiring talks and all the attendees that made these sessions lively and engaging! We were so impressed with the younger investigators 🤩 the field has a bright future 👏👏👏

At #CellBio24 discussing the merits of US vs UK/EU science. No clear winner, but at least we can design a device to properly pour water. Who knew we were so clever?
jordanraff.bsky.social
The Company of Biologists @biologists.bsky.social have been such great supporters of the biology community in the UK and around the world. Celebrating 100yrs at a meeting/party in Liverpool next year. Some great speakers (and me too).
jordanraff.bsky.social
Looking forward to it! The weather in the uk is really miserable.

Glad to see the centrioles centre-stage!

The lab has now officially moved over! Actually don’t think we posted on Twitter for ages - can’t be bothered to even check. @jrafflab.bsky.social
jordanraff.bsky.social
Thanks Steve, I will have a look. Are you using this effectively?
jordanraff.bsky.social
Agreed (although not certain citations don’t give some-admittedly overly simplistic-information). But that takes a lot of work!
jordanraff.bsky.social
What do we think about this? I have to admit I often look at people’s profile when reviewing a grant, as often very little detail of applicant’s publications in the grant. I feel guilty, but am not sure it is irrelevant? Would love to ditch Google!
giorgio.gilest.ro
Shortly before the day of its 20th anniversary, I decided to unpublish my profile from Google scholar. It gives too much emphasis to the things that do not matter in science and too little to those that do. Started well (including preprints + some networking capabilities) but settled poorly 1/4
jordanraff.bsky.social
Somehow this really hits home. Oh my.

I want to be clear now that this is getting eyes -

This is a choice made by admin and the state legislature.

Please don’t abandon us out of anger. These changes are wildly unpopular. Help us. Give us coverage, ideas, support, rattle chains, etc.
