A winter tour of Luxembourg’s fairytale chateaux – on the country’s free bus network
This tiny country is awash with atmospheric castles, many of which you can stay in, making for a magical wintry break. And it won’t cost you a cent to travel between them

Fifty of this year’s album releases I’ve enjoyed … some to a greater extent than others, but listed here alphabetically so as to remain impartial (until year end, at least).

Interested in your thoughts …

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

In Discworld, cities thrive because they welcome dwarfs, trolls, vampires, and humans alike. Ankh-Morpork works because everyone belongs. Funny how fiction can seem more humane than policy sometimes.

You know, we have for nearly 50 years taken it for granted that it is indeed fun to stay at the YMCA, and yet this popular assertion is back only by a single, non-rigorous, musical anecdote, I propose it is time for a study with a control group, which stays at a Holiday Inn Express

“And I said: ‘What’s the bad news?’ He said: ‘It’s going to be really embarrassing for me.’"

Okay. I laughed out loud.
“Well, Mr. Deckard,” said Rachel, “why don’t you test me?”
“To see if you’re a replicant? Why?”Deckard was confused.
“Humour me”, said Rachel, playfully. Deckard shrugged, sat down at the table, opened his briefcase, and took out nine photos, three of which contained traffic lights.

This is brilliant.
Both the comment and the video.
It has taken medical science 200 years to advance humans to the point where people are so healthy and living so long that they can deny that science and medicine is what got us here.

When I entered the SF/F field, I was told you couldn't market SF as humor because (Hitchhiker excepted) it wouldn't sell. Then Redshirts came out and changed all that. Now the field has lots of work explicitly marketed as humor. Do I feel smug about that? Yes.

Discworld QOTD, from Snuff

“Cheery was aware that Commander Vimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'.”
Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight

“Oh, I feel very angry a lot of the time," said Tiffany, "but I just put it away somewhere until I can do something useful with it.”
Discworld QOTD, from Lords and Ladies

“I had to learn. All my life. The hard way. And the hard way’s pretty hard, but not so hard as the easy way.”

"Ukraine is only targeting military targets. Not civilians, not private [property], not energy infrastructure. This is the difference."
